Replacement of A/C Idle-Up Actuator on 87 4Runner

Spring and top part of nylon adjustment screw gone.
Greetings,

The A/C idle-up actuator on my 87 4Runner has broken. By broken I mean the nylon screw fractured about an inch down from the head while I was driving and the spring propelled it into the underside of the hood. The spring is long gone but the top part of the nylon screw miraculously landed on the valve cover. The part number for a new one is 88606-35020 but the Toyota dealer said it is no longer available and my searching has confirmed that. Does anyone know if this thing is available anywhere? I was thinking of ordering the actuator made for the old Camrys and using the screw and spring from that in my existing unit; not sure if those pieces are compatible though. I appreciate any suggestions.

Nick

Your AC does Work??

If not just plug the hole and call it good.

Look for a used one!

Should be quite a lot floating around.

Using a newer one is always a option.

Only a vacuum operated valve giving the engine more air

Thanks for the reply. Yes, A/C works, in fact had it serviced by my mechanic a few weeks ago.

As Wyoming9 pointed out, all that valve does is raise the idle a smidge when the A/C is on, so you won't stall out at stoplights. If you're unable to fix the valve (and it's not leading to a vacuum leak), then you can raise the idle a bit, or even better, just hover your foot on the accelerator when you're at a light and the A/C is on.

Thank you for the input. It is definitely affecting the idle (the A/C is always on this time of year in central Arizona). I’ll look for a used replacement or try to fix this one.

nickh, did you ever fix your idle up actuator (aka diaphragm sub-assy, cooler)? If not there is another thread here that may help you fix, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...3#post52425243

If the rubber diaphragm is still good inside the acuator and all you need then is the plastic idle screw and maybe the spring too, there are quite a few actuators from other models that use the same plastic screw. you can buy another actuator (new) often for less than ebay, and the screw that comes with the part will of course have new o-ring and spring too. There are a couple of part numbers in that other thread.

if you don't know if the rubber diaphragm inside the actuator is good or bad you can check by applying vacuum to the "L" shaped vacuum port on the bottom of actuator. It is sealed by the diaphragm at the bottom of the actuator. If it does not hold a vacuum then the diaphragm has become stiff and cracked and air is leaking past it. That diaphragm is one of the key weak link inside that actuator and the only thing that really fails. There is a spring inside too that holds the diaphragm against a port inside the actuator when it is not receiving vacuum from the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) mounted on top of valve cover. Good luck.
