Rear Third chipped
Man this kinda sucks, I pulled my rear third out so I could weld the spider gears together so I could have some fun out at the All Pro Offroad Jamboree, but when I inspected the third I came across one chipped tooth on the ring, pinion is all good, the chippe is about a fourh of the upper part of the tooth, never noticed a noise or anything when I was driving on it, should I just go ahead and weld it and wait for it to blow up , o if anyone has a rear third with 4.10 gearing they would like to sell me send me a pm, looking for somethin local, thought it was a good time to ask.

You wont want to buy mine, but this just happened to mine last week and i think mine had been chipped for a while as well!
I am currently trying to find a 4.10 ring and pinion if you or anyone knows where to get just the R&P... appearantly they are very hard to find!

In these types of situations I find upgrading to the parts I really want to be the best solution instead of replacing parts that I don't really want.
For example, my rear dif was worn out so instead of spending $300 for a used 3rd (I couldnt find any for under $300 USED locally) I bought new chromoly axles and a Detroit Truetrac dif.
Worth every extra penny I spent that I didn't really have. But looking back am so happy I did.
something to think about when stock stuff breaks. =)

Probably not enough carrier bearing Pre-load.
You could freshen up the CB PL and keep running it. Here is a write up off Zuk's site.

I'm sure you will find that your Pre-load was way loose allowing the ring gear to deflect and finally chip a tooth. Every diff I have looked at that was stock had very little pre-load left due to all the mileage and wear.

I have thrown about 4 or 5 sets of 4.10's in the recycle can in the last few month's. You should make sure you have some one check the Backlash before they disassemble the set of 4.10's you get as you need to set them up with the same back lash ideally.
