Radio help - very little sound

Hi ya'll, I have a 88 toyota pickup that i had next to zero radio reception, so I went back with a stock unit. It all works fine except very little sound from the dash speakers. I have it cranked all the way up and can only hear with truck off. So i know the wires to the speaker are good just not getting enough power to them? Did an 88 pickup have a factory amp? The old radio sounded great just i prefer to hear sports talk. What am I missing?

Thanks for any help.

Most likely the amp is integrated inside the radio. I could tell by the part number on the radio 86120-xxxxx.
If you post a photo of the radio i may be able to tell by that.

Put a volt meter (ac) on the speaker leads and see if you gain power when increasing volume, see if the radio is even working right

I'd check to make sure one of your speaker wires isn't shorting out to the chassis somewhere (pinched) perhaps.

I have to say, though, I gave up on my factory radio+cassette_eater long ago. New radios are cheap.

I like the simplicity of the factory radios, but the Panasonic I got for mine has a USB for a stick, and I like that. I bought the wiring adapter so I could plug it in to the Toyota harness with no splicing. I used the Toyota brackets to mount and the fit is perfectly flush.

I had an after market with cd and Bluetooth but could never get a radio signal to stay clear. I guess I can go back to it. I tried a signal booster but had little affect. Urg

Could just be antenna issues? I know where I'm at the signal for local radio station is awful, mainly for the tower being on top of the skit hill, another 6000ft up

That was my first thought. Changed from a aftermarket to a stock type. One of my other joys is a 52 MG replica and it has no problems picking up the stations! I am sandwiched in the small mountains of Alabama so that does contribute.
