Which would be eaiser on my 93 toy pickup?
I need to replace the fuel pump. All the bolts are rusted on both.

I would opt for dropping the tank than. I replaced the bed on my old '84 the bolts were so rusted I ended up cutting a hole in the floor of the bed to get to the bolts.
Keep pumping some rust penetrator on the bolts...

 

yeah, Dropping the tank isnt too bad, just make sure its as empty as you can get it, cause if not, its going to be a pain to get it back in there

 

I disagree - much better to pull the bed. Especially if you live in the rust belt. All those hardlines are fiddly and will crack if you look at them funny, and then you are @#$#$'d

 

Removing the bed is a pain in the ass and requires 2+ people. I dropped the tank and got it bolted back up by myself. I had to lay on my back and use my feet and spare hand to hold it up while I tightened the bolts.

even once in the desert to fix my ripped filler tube, Not that big of a pita

If you want to move the bed outta the way, Pull the mounting bolts on the pass side, then loosen the drivers side bassically all that you can.
Have someone else hepl you lift up the pass side until you can stick something huge beefy and strong between the frame rail and the bed.
Also, if you go that route, please be very careful not to have your head in there and knock the *huge beefy strong* thing outta the way.

I vote for lifting the bed. I've done it both ways and lifting the bed was easier. If you have rusted bolts on the tank chances are everything else up there is rusty. You could have problems with the feed lines when dropping the tank. If you don't have a helper to lift the bed off the truck you can use a cherry picker and a couple of ratchet straps to lift off the bed. Thats what I did. Heck you could even use the ratchet straps slung over a tree to lift the bed up.

 

Another vote for lifting the bed. I've jacked the bed up, propped it on 4x4's and saw horses, then pulled the truck out of the way. of course, I also jacked the entire cab off the frame by myself too. A high lift helps immensely with those tasks.
