PS Rebuild

Anyone know of a good write-up on rebuilding a power steering unit for a '95 Runner. Just wondering the best way to approach something like this. The rebuild kit is only $40 so I'd rather do it myself and save the other $200 I was quoted for labor. HOw hard could it be? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The pump or the gearbox?

Personally, I wouldn't bother rebuilding the pump, just replace it.

Yeah, I guess I'll price up the unit as well. It's the pump itself. One ofthe reasons I wanted to just rebuild it was because other than the leak there's seems to be nothing wrong. Thanks for the input.

its a simple rebuild. the hardest part is getting the pulley off. simply take the old one off and match the parts to the new one

Tc posted the link to the manual, which will help, the other link is good too,

Here is a thread about a guy who had trouble getting his off, I guess that it is pretty common for people run into problems getting a few things off,

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f120...g-pump-128174/

I gave the guy a couple pointers in that thread, so I won't post a bunch of them up here until you read through it and still need help, then go ahead and ask,

Pointers for the rebuild: buy a toyota rebuild kit, not a cheapy one, and on this thing (the little vsv valve or whatever it is), make sure that you mark which hose goes where, before you pull it apart! I just used a silver sharpie to mark the hose and the plastic valve :

resealing p/s pumps is very easy. Honestly, the only parts you need to replace are the front shaft seal, the resevour oring, the rear cover oring and the 2 orings inside. The rear cover oring and the 2 orings inside are the large orings. 2 will be a greyish color and 1 black. The 2 greyish ones go on the inside of the pump and the black is for the rear cover. The 2 vac lines on the vsv dont matter where they go. Too bad you didnt live in cali. I would charge you less than $100 to do it

I usually recommend replacing the pump with a used one.....

pumps are cheap and easy to come by....
