1981 Hilux, 4" suspension + 1" body lift, 37" MTR tires with 5.29:1 diff gearing, 1995 2.7-liter 3RZ-FE with 1985 W56HD-A and triple Marlin Crawler cases. Rig weighs just under 3500 lbs with Marlin Crawler armor.

I get 15-16 MPG around town and 21-22 MPG cruising at 60-65 MPH, or 19-20 MPG cruising at 70-75 MPH.

Here is an example of cruising the speed limit on the freeway for 160 miles. My speedometer reads 3% too high, so corrected my mileage is 22.3 MPG:

I LOVE MY 3RZ!!!

That is a beautiful piece of machinery. I've been looking for one myself. How much did the swap cost you?

I got a really great deal on the 3RZ, it was back before the swap became popular. Check out what I wrote here, reply #4: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index...4793#msg204793 Expect to budget $1,500 if you can find cheap parts, or upwards to $2,500 depending on the shape/quality of the engine you find. If you don't have strict smog laws like we do here in Commifornia, then I suspect you could do the conversion for less. All the small incidentals of an engine swap really add up.

As I mentioned above, the great deal I got on my engine (1995 version) for around $400: ECU, complete engine/cowl/interior/O2/fuel pump harness, full exhaust with catalytic convertor, flywheel/clutch/engine mounts/purge tank/etc. I still needed to convert to a fuel injected fuel tank, but I pretty much had 85% of everything I needed, it was an awesome deal. My engine originally had 160k miles I believe.

In contrast, Dean purchased a 2004 twin coil 3RZ, with only engine + engine harness only, nothing else. He paid around $2,000 and the engine only had 9,000 miles. Yes, nine thousand total miles.

So it's all about what you want to get for your rig.

'94 Surf, 3.0 V6 auto, 255/70/15 (29"dia). 174,000Km's Bone stock except for the Lenso alloys. I'm getting 4.7Km/litre (4.7 km/liter = ~11 mpg) which is depressing. My work is less than 3km away and I live up a really steep, twisty hill, so I guess that's largely the culprit. None the less, pretty sad mileage

1988 4Runner SR5, 3L, auto, 5.29's, rear ARB, 5" T.G. lift, 35x12.50x15 BFG M/T's.

Recently went from Reno, NV via I-80 to Salt Lake City, then south on I-15 to I-70, then east into Colorado.

2600 miles round trip, averaged 16.5 MPG. I didn't know what to expect since around town I get 10-12 MPG. I had plenty of vacation time scheduled so I was not in a hurry. I tried to average 65 MPH.

I was pleasantly surprised by my mpg. Consumed some oil, but otherwise an awesome trip with flawless performance of a 23 year old vehicle.
On the way home, near Golconda, NV., passed a milestone.

Stock 89 4runner 22re rebuilt head and new HG. With the old worn out 31x10.50's I was getting 24+ mixed driving. I do mostly commuting with my rig, so I thought I'd change back to closer to stock tire size in order to get better gas mileage. Now I am running Wrangler radials 235/75/15's and I got only 16 mpg on my first tank. What happened? I understand that my mileage was technically off when computing my mpg with the 31's because of the bigger tire, but it couldn't have been that much, could it?

Well, I'll tell you how to figure actual mileage with oversized tires. You take the size in inches of the oversized tire and divide it by the size in inches of the stock tire and that will give you a number you multiply the mileage by. I think for your rig it should be 1.11 but with worn tires it could be as low as 1.07. So you could run the numbers and see.
Also, when you put bigger tires on it makes it harder for the engine to pull the rig, decreasing mileage. But, you aslo go further with each turn of the tire. Since mileage decreases with bigger tires exponentially and going further increases directly, you could increase mileage as you go bigger until the decrease is larger than the increase and off sets it. So as long as you don't go too big you get better mileage.

Ok, so if I got that right.... my stock size is 225/75r15(28.28") and I am currently running new 235/75r15(28.87"). Gives me the ratio of 1.02 when I take the 28.87 divided by the 28.28. So, Mileage---272 x 1.02 = 277 Miles. Fuel---12.9 Gallons. 277miles / 12.9g= 21.9 mpg. That sounds a lot better than the 16 mpg that I thought I was getting... I must have typed something wrong in the calculator this morning, 'cause no matter how I calculate it now, it's better than 16 mpg. Thanks for the clarification.
