100% flat highway, 65mph at 2200 rpm = 19 mpg
City/highway - 50/50 = 15.5 mpg
92 3.0 auto
33x9.5x15 bfg at at 40psi
4.88
4" lift
manual locking hubs
no other mods that add weight or drag
I wonder how many of these posts with taller tires are accounting for the odometer reading being off?

I checked and double checked. It goes 65mph at around 2250 - 2400. Hangs out just above the 2250 rpm mark.

I just did some cheap upgrades that consisted of a electric fan off a 03 Nissian Quest van from pull-a-part for 17 bucks and a 2 speed fan controller and relay with an in line fuse for 25. I also got a set of hubs for 70 bucks. I just did a mostly highway check on a 3.0 with a fresh tune up, automatic trans, and 31/10.5 tires and averaged 18mpg. I thought that was real good compared to last I checked. Could be the cold weather who knows but I'm happy. ~Derek

1989 SR5 V6 ExtraCab
221,325 miles
215-75-R15 tires
15"x7" wheels, std lift
City=17mpg
Hwy=24mpg
This truck was in SAD SHAPE when I first got it in 2008. After plowing nearly what I paid into it(@$3k) I still love this old truck and intends to drive it into the ground. On the selected tankfuls I add Berryman's B12 Chemtool...the mileage registers 28mpg! More pix in the Members' Gallery...here is a teaser:

Zach; yours is a auto 2 wd , right? I bet it would be wicked higher, if you dropped the tailgate on highway driving!!! mine is a 4 rnr 4x4, and I am getting the 18 and 22 ish, depending on driving. It could be better, with radials instead of all terrains, and I have about a 3 inch lift on it, and I carry about 100 lbs of bugout gear at all times, but it is still plenty good for me...

for some reason, not quite sure why, the tacos and 4rnrs that were 2wd autos, allways could seem to break that 22-23 mph barrier on the highway, even if they were a bit lifted and had bigger tires. reguardless if the were 4 or 6 cyls.

Ever have leaves in the back of your truck when you go down the highway?
They don't fly out often, and most come in the cab with the rear window open.

... Oh come on!!!
So let me see; a solid vertical wall, that directly is smashed into by rearward moving wind, and acting almost like an airbrake, to wind that comes down into the bed, the mileage gets worse, if this airbrake is removed...
Please show me some tests done on this, otherwise, I will go to my grave, refusing to believe this one.
That air vortex effect is created by the wind, smashing into the top of the tailgate, bouncing downward at an angle into and toward the center of the bed, and curling upwards against the rear of the cab. Think on the ' smashing' part..

there ya go RR, mythbusters for you.
im getting around 10mpg.
factors-
-22re w/ 5sp manual tranny
-45mph speed on decent hills to work 2 mi away
-hubs locked in but in 2wd while driving on the road
-4x4 a lot for getting several people per day unstuck and getting up my driveway
-31x9.5 mud terrains
-winter mix gas
-recent addition of my 150lb bumper
i saw about 15 mpg on the tank that i didnt have my hubs locked in for between snows when my driveway was still 2wdable.

91 4runner, 3.0, auto, 4x4, 33x12.50 tires.
city: sucks
highway: still sucks.
On average 14-15mpg.
Next upgrade will probably be a chevy 350. About the same mileage, twice the power
