Well pick up my first 4Runner late this afternoon. After supposedly sitting for almost 8 months it made it around the dealership lot a couple of times and then on to the house. Not really bad for $1k if I do say so myself. Purchased a battery, two big cans of fuel system treatment. Only one small problem other than bad battery terminal connectors. The hood HATES to latch. It's a total pain in the you know what. And my biggest smile was seeing the back windows go up and down event if it was only using the key. To say the spousal unit is not happy is an understatement (we've been looking at Jeeps ). Oh well I pay for her 06 ride. She'll get over it.

Need to get it cleaned up and the vitals changed. Has a bit of a noisy tick ( maybe the valves need adjusting ? ) looks like it might have had a new timing chain maybe ( looks like a gasket change ). It's got a 22RE ( of course ), 5spd. looks to have had some "upgrades" due to the split rear seat. Has had the A/C system yanked off. Maybe during timing chain deal. Buddy thinks the doors were changed out ( to explain the mirrors and different colored door panels).
Lots of miles on it right now (362K) but mostly just needs a little TLC first to be a nice weekender initially.

Commnets, suggested first steps, things to watch out for would be appreciated.

Nice score for a grand , now if you lose the GENERAL LEE wheels and a little TLC maybe in the long run your woman will come to appreciate it as much as you do and forget all about the heep thing.

Check cylinder compression , timing chain and cover , do a full rebuild if needed it's not to bad at all and you can double the mileage on the odometer and explin to her she will never see a heep pull that off with out a new engine or two along the way.

for $1000, it's really hard to go wrong with a 4Runner.
I looked over the Picasa pics and I think you did well... you got far more for 1000 than spending twice that for a Cheep would get.

OK... thanks for the support! New battery purchased. Figured out that including the missing battery hold down the windshield washer bottle is gone. No wonder there is so much S P A C E there! Purchased new battery cable ends. Can't wait to sweat some this afternoon to see if this helps the I'll start when I want to issues.

Tell your old lady to chill. The yota will last 3x longer then a heep and cost you thousands less..

For the hood, inspect the cable and latch. My cable was frayed and wouldnt let everything move smoothly. My latch also came loose so I really had to slam the hood down to lock it in...

 

So for the first steps...small ones... a new battery and terminals and until I feel confortable with a small starting issue I also installed the dis-connect you see....

isn't the hold down lovely! Used factory part on the way along with windshield washer tank/pump....

So here was the workout action... OMG could I have picked a hotter afternoon...just wanted to see what a little buff action would give the paint...

it almost sounds like this relay is clicking... and oddly enough this thing looks like it's been banged on a time or two...am I onto something with this??



I've went out a couple of times over the evening and it started both times.

the one right at the fender/hood line... it's marked relay something something.... and being the newbie I am I'm still trying to read all the "read before you post stuff attempting to figure it out...

And the hood latch..well I got it to work a couple of time then not... It seems like mostly it is the release latch that is no longer bent just right.. I looked up under the hood while attempting to shut it again.... rebent it and bingo perfect close... two opens later back to the drawing board...


So I coated it with lube and called it an afternoon... dinner was ready!

X4 on the wheels! X2 on the topless! Hood stuff is easy and cheap. Great find!

 

The electrical part in the picture above is called a solenoid resistor, is cotrols the voltage going to the injectors. The one on my 86 4Runner went bad and it wouldn`t start, i had a used one and put it on and that fixed the problem. I think its a dealer only part, and im sure its expensive.

 

Looking good. For $1,000.oo, you can't beat it. It runs and drives even. Great find. I'd have bought it too.
