People That Have Done AFM Swap, Question ?.
#101
I've been looking at this mod myself and I too live in commiefornia.
My question is this though, what if you were to do both this mod and the intake battery swap at the same time? Would that in turn cause a smogging issue?
I know that the ready to go diy K&N "cold air" kits for the 22re have carb numbers so how might that affect things, with any custom tubing not having said carb numbers.

Ya that is true it shouldnt change the smog pass/fail issue what so ever really. The visual is the trick though. Ill probably go down to my smog guy and see what he has to say. Other wise it looks like Ill be doin the good old two year switch eh?
Who knows, maybe ill get lucky and a fellow cali will post their smog experience with this mod =-)

So, I went down to my smog guy today and it is as i feared.....
Unless you get the carb sticker, it aint legal in cali.
Now in the past alot of these smog guys would just overlook it b/c who cares right? Well now if you get pulled over and they do a check on the intake unit and it aint good to go they may ask you when you got your last smog send you on your way then come back to the smog guy and be like hey why did this smog pass? Then fine the smogger fines starting at a thousand bucks as a deterrent to NOT smog these intakes w/o said carb legel numbers.
Now, that means custom piping and intake wont pass. However if you went and got said k&n kit WITH that carb sticker and modded the pipe to route to the batt side location who is to say that isnt the way it came in box? Slap the sticker in a visible spot make it clean and call it a day. When or if it is looked up the carb number will say that said kit was made for your vehicle and that it is legal as can be. You got your carb number your vehicle passes smog so all in all its a lot more pricey but doing it 'right' with less headaches in the long run may be worth it.
If you are intersted in the k&n kit that is smog legal you can find it at lc engineering whose package comes with a pipe or go to k&n site which does not come with the pipe.

When the smog guys look up the CA smog Executive Order number, it shows a picture of the intake parts and exactly how it is installed.
I went through all of this when had a custom 5vze engine. I did however make it pass smog by using a supra MAF and a factory intake from a chevy 4.3l. The smog ref did not question the intake as it looked like a factory intake. If anything looks non-factory, it will fail.
The smog tech even checked fuel injector part numbers with a mirror and a magnifying glass to make sure that I had the correct injectors installed.

Wow, this is incredible. I cant imagine how the airflow ROUTING decides if a vehicle is legal or not. Unbelievable, Sigh.
I honestly didnt think that they would go so far as to have pictures to go all along with this. So BASICALLY it is impossible to do this swap in cali unless your happy re routing everything every two years...
You mention the supra maf which leads me to think you had the 22re yet you mention the custom 3.4 liter, is there a supra mod for that motor as well or are you talking about two seperate motors?

Its been several months since some of you have swapped the stock AFM for a larger one, those of you that have done this on a 22RE and have had this mod for a while now, what kind of improvements have you noticed, better throttle response, better gas mileage, maybe a little more power ?. Is anyone using an air filter on the AFM itself ?. Im getting ready to do this mod on my 4Runner because the hose that conects to the throttle body has a big crack in it and i already have the larger AFM, it came off of a 5M-GE engine, i also have the elbows and 3'' aluminum thin wall pipe, all i need to do is put it all together.
22re w/33" Swampers 22mpg 4:88 gears,DT tri y headers 2 1/4" super 44's flowmaster,stock cam also heres a pic of original AFM housing

22re w/31's AT 21-22mpg 4:56 gears,LCE headers 2 1/4" super 44's flowmaster,260 Comp Cam

Oh man Blackulua, i would LOVE to hear how your rig sounds with that.
@ Duffdog Thanks for the info man, I wasnt aware of that mod, sounds pretty sweet. Also I have the LC engineering performance cam, I am not too sure how it compares to the trd stage II so forgive my ignorance lol.
But ultimately my intake exhaust setup with be like this
Supra afm swap, stock airbox location slightly modded to look factory yet accept afm. LC Header, LC cam, all to go with my currently installed high flow cat with magnaflow exhaust with 2.25 piping

you guys think it would pass smog if you put the air filter box from the supra in there to make it look factory?? thats what I was thinking on doing, just havent had a chance or the funds to do it yet.
