You know, now that I think about it, if you could find an airbox that was square and looked like the factory 4runner box...sort of... you just might pass with no problems. My 98 passed smog with a totally weird intake (though it was a factory intake from another car)

Im modifying the stock air box on mine so the supra afm bolts right up to it and looks all nice and clean. The supra box sounds like a solid idea though.

Stock gears with 31's and on the Glacier Pass on the 14HWY in CA, heading over into Palmdale, I now, with the 261 CAM, can get up it at 65mph, no problem, .....where as before, it was 50mph in the slow lane, slapping the dash, saying, "C'MONNNNNNN BETTY" beforehand! lol.

However; I have the LCE Cold Air Intake set up with LCE CA legal header, and now I'm curious if I'll have issues with my Cold Air set up as well! Grrrr.

if u have a 22re it will work. the AFM has to be out of a 82' supra 5mge. no other year will work and they have a specific part number, search google for "supra AFM". i have done this mod and you get better MPG and maybe some throttle response. Unless you do aluminum tubing headers and exhaust u will not gain any real HP but it sound real cool! I used all cheap spectra parts from oreillys and got the AFM at car-parts.com. good luck

if u have a stock 22re AFM from any year plugged in now then yea it will work, and i am assuming that u have a 22re ECU as well so all should be fine. Also the 22r has no AFM so it has no harness for one. Did u do the swap or a shop?

I have the magic 22250-43110 in hand finally and have a few questions that have been teased here but not answered.

1. Did anyone successfully mod their stock airbox to fit the Supra AFM?

2. Where are people getting the intake hardware - silicone elbows and pipe (alum or stainless?). As simple as O'Reillys?

3. With a cone filter in the open, how bad* is the noise?

*I say "bad" because while I'm solo I don't mind the noise, but we also take the 4Runner on the family camping trips and the droning could get old after an hour or so on the road.

Thanks.

I had my steel airbox modified. I dont have pics on hand but I "may" be able to get some posted tonight after work.

The noise I noticed was a slight throaty hum/growl. Nothing obnoxious however. My magnaflow drones out the intake however. Keep in mind mine is enclosed. Not an open cone.

The orielly autozone stuff is the easiest to work with from all I have heard. Cheapish and moderate selection.

Hopefully pics to come this evening!

This right here is why the stock air box wont work

So this right here is what you have to mod to make it work.

Into this....

Hide the "bad" name.

Interesting.

What is the part # on the top of your AFM? Mine is different 22250-43110. It has round flanges on both ends. This is what mine looks like:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...04/index2.html

Nice job on the airbox.

I would like to keep the airbox too, just have to give some thought. Another option is to do as pictured earlier in this thread and box it in. That will likely be the result.

Had I to do over again, I would have done the battery location swap 6 months ago before I added a bunch of electrical goodies and before this was even on the radar. It would be too much of wire to rerun and/or extend at this point.

EDIT - PLEASE IGNORE THE TOP COMMENT! I just realized that the flange comes off.

Cool

I have the 82 supra afm, Those flanges you are talking about can be unscrewed off

Edit: The reason I was stuck on keeping the stock look was for cali smog, If I had just did a custom tube/pipe for intake, it would not pass due to lack of a carb EO number. So by keeping the stock look with "stock" nippen denso parts, No one is the wiser or complains and my smog tests pass without issue.

You know...this info has been most helpful with deciding what I want to do. I am going with the cone filter with some extra dust protection and build a shrowd around it. Thanks.

see if you can find the first elbow off of the supra afm, the one that's attached to it. i have all the factory ducting from the TB plugged into this elbow. this way you don't have to use that crappy flex tube, which is a joke, and gives you a clean look. it's effective too. i've got a k&n cone filter and i just made a mount to sit on top of the lower half of the stock box. i'll try to get a pic on this reply.

Now installed in the truck after MONTHS of use.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/67740550@N02/6176722215/http://www.flickr.com/photos/67740550@N02/6176722215/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/67740550@N02/, on Flickr

Now the supra afm is taller than the stock afm, so to compensate for this I cut the rubber bushings holding the air box to the engine compartment. Simple with an exacto and patience. After this the hood shut and my "stock" set up looks fine.

If I was to do this again I would be far more particular about the mounting plate. The screws approach was NOT how I would have liked it (OCD Preference). But it does work, and it works well.

Also dont mind the dirty engine bay, this is from the last Big bear trip I went on last month and I havent gotten in there to clean up yet lol.

I do have a question though.....

I have heard that supposedly the supra afm isnt compatible with 89+ 22re's. I dont see why but it is what I have heard. So I dont know if the ECU wont read, if the plug is different or what the deal is.

Its possible it is just a rumor and untrue but instead of guessing or theory crafting I'd like to see someone who has it installed on a 89 90 + truck Just to be sure.

Nice work, Eightyeight... looks clean.

Can't help on the 89+ query... but I'm sure someone will jump in on that. Might be a limited number of those who've tried it and failed, that's all I'm thinking.... so I guess it could take some time to get input.

PS> Is your rig that Silver-Blue'ish color? LOVE that color... A neighbor has that on an 88 Xtra Cab 4x4, 33x10.50's, lifted... SUWEET!

Thank you very much chef I tried to do it the best I could with limited abilities.

Im hoping it is just a random issue or a non existent one. I want to make a super legit lil 2wd pick up to be DD. Supra afm, "cold air" (so to speak) Electric fan, gm alt convert, and LC headers with LC cam, all i need on that list still is the header!

But I wanna find out more about the afm issue cuz that will decide if the pick up i buy is an 85-88 or and 89-95...

And the paint job is just a clean silver color but now you got me thinkin chef so Imma hafta go and take a more in depth look to see if there really is some blue in it lol.
