Oxygen sensor

Have a 1986 pickup with the '92 motor and it is only getting 11 miles to the gallon. I am curious to know if the oxygen sensor could be the main cause of that, Because my front oxygen sensor is rattling in place and my rear one is gone blocked off. I am wondering if that is what I should invest in ( cause oxygen sensors are kinda spendy) or start looking somewhere else

My 86 4Runner has 1 only, imagine trucks are the same.

If its loose then air is being registered that should not really be there and the computer might be richening the mixture thinking it is running lean.

Fix it and see what happens.

Engine light flickers. And would RTV or right stuff work to seal that place?

1) RTV probably won't do you any good. "High-temp" RTV is good to about 600°F, the O2 sensor doesn't start working until it gets above 750°F.

2) If the engine light is flickering, it's likely to be storing codes. Why don't you read them. Don't put too much faith in the code, though, since your loose O2 sensor is probably feeding wrong data to the ECM.

Fix it for good. New gasket and new hardware.

No need to do something so simple twice.

Just because its not on all the time doesn't mean there is no code. jump the terminals and see what codes you are throwing. But you still need to get that sensor fixed before you do anything

If you are only getting 11 MPG, then you will break even on having a muffler shop fix your problem in about half a tank. There really is no reason not to do it right.
