ok i was stumped today, my rear driver's side tire has had oil on it for a couple months now, wherever it is coming from, it get all over the drum (on the outside) and COVERS the inside of the rim in oil...anyway i was in maine today, took a road trip with some friends, well today i saw that the oil had gotten on the outside of my tire, well my friends and i decided to pull the rear tire off and see where is was coming from. the drum was covered in what looked like used motor oil. we whiped it clean and put the tire back on. took it for a ride and heard a squeeking from the rear drivers side tire, almost as it some metal part was rubbing. i checked the brake fluid and the master cylinder is FULL and i also took the truck to a garage up in maine and they said the diff fluid was also FULL, what and where is this fluid coming from it it is not leaking from the diff or brakes??? anyone else have this problem

 

axle seals probably. did you pull the drum off? if there's oil all over your rear shoes & brake components...definitely axle seals.

 

check your diff breather, if its clogged it could be forceing the oil out past the seal.

 

will check the diff breather tomorrow, if it is clogged does that mean the seals are gone

 

sounds like axle seals to me, i get to replace mine this week... its a fun job!

sure man, ive never done it before but i have the FSM and dont believe it can be THAT difficult. im ordering the parts tomorrow so i should be doing it tomorrow or wednesday.

 

I just pulled my axles last weekend and swapped the 3rd on my truck so I can tell you that part is easy. My seals weren't in great shape but I don't think they're leaking so I won't bother until they do.

Do you have to get the rear seals pressed in or can you tap them in with a hammer?

 

you can use a hammer, its the bearings that need a press, talk about a beeotch.

 

so can i do this kind of job with just regular shop tools?

 

For the most part yes, but you'll need the inner seals pressed on. And it might not just be the axel seals, it could also be your wheel cylinder. Thats alot cheaper and easier and less time consuming than pulling shafts and taking em to get the seals pressed on.

 

yeah i have to do mine soon too. ill have to check the diff breather as well.

 

if you find its your seals, you might as well do both sides and your bearings. gear oil will strip out the lube from inside the bearings, rendering them useless. get a barbed fitting and extend your rear diff breather while you are underneath.

not what you wanted to hear, but having done seals and bearings within six month of each other, do it now before the wheeling season begins.
