no power in a gear

hey i have a 88 auto 4 runner with the v6 and i cant seem to figure out the lack of power...heres the issue when its in park or neutral it will rev to the sky when its in any gear it will only rev up to 2000 rpms and slowly go up to 2500 maybe 3000 at best...this is a trail only rig and ive only been out in it a hand full of times and it suck cause i can barely get up hills... the even stranger thing was that one night were were out with our women and they got cold sitting watching people hill climb so they got in the truck turned it on and had the heat going, it prob. idled for about a hour then we decided to leave and the whole ride back to camp which was about 45 min to a hour it had all the power it should was reving up in every gear like it should ... it felt like the truck should of felt... if anyone can please steer me in the right direction to fix this problem it would be a great help.....thanks

Find the service manual in the sticky and go to the ignition section and find page eg-195, it will show you a way to test your computer, but i should also mention, you need to find in the service manual the specific ecu pinout for your year 4runner, my dads 93 4runner has a similar problem and i narrowed it down to the ecm being bad, we havent replaced it yet but will soon

My dads 4runner was having the same lack of power issue, turned out to be the fuel pressure dampener
