Check the electrical connection on the O/D button, does the light on the dash stay on?

Hey Jim, is the engine getting up to operating temp? I know with my 2nd gen it does not go into O/D until then.

The ATF has to reach about 170 degrees Fahrenheit before O/D kicks in. This is also true for the converter lockup. ( At least, that's the way it works on my 92 model 3.0 )

There's a bundle of connectors on the passenger's side, near the alternator which comes from the harness and goes to the various solenoids, sensors and switches on the transmission. This is a problem area for some vehicles of this age. Check them out, make sure there isn't any corrosion or disconnects, etc. Also, might want to check the ECT box under the console in front of the shifters, make sure it's plugged in securely and that there aren't any corrosion/dirt problems with it's connector as well. I'm not sure if the light will come on or not if that box is unplugged.

If your cooling system is in proper working order,, go with the 180. You'll appreciate the fuel mileage improvement.
