Never owned a 22R, what to expect?

Hello Yotatech, feels good to be back. Haven't been on in over 2 1/2 years, doesn't feel that long.

Okay, so I have owned a few yotas in my day (although I currently do not have one ) but all of mine have been EFI (before I swapped the engines of course). A guy I used to work with owes me some money and is offering to give me some weenie little 2wd 88 pickup with a 22r (yes, carbureted) in exchange. Now this is far from what I would pick out myself, but being that it's basically free I figured I may take him up on it. The body's a little banged up but i was surprised to find almost no rust and it only has 102k miles on it. Only thing is, I don't know what to expect. I'm not sure if I should just turn around and sell the thing or if I should fix it up a little and keep it around for myself. I'm driving a chevy blazer right now that gets me about 14mpg so a 4cyl DD might save me some money, plus I really do sort of miss having a toyota (however lame this one might be). Either that or I can just tell him to scrap the thing and use the money to start paying me back. Do you think it's worth it?

Does anyone have any experience with these old carb setups? Are they as reliable as the 22RE? What kind of MPG should I expect from it? I think I remember reading that they only have like 96hp or something like that, do they really have a hard time getting out of their own way? I know even my 22RE's struggled to do so... This thing only has a 4spd so my expectations are not too high to begin with here. Anyone with any input or knowledge, anything at all is greatly appreciated.

from what Ive heard they are just as reliable as the EFI and if tuned right will get the same MPG. I know from experience that a carburated engine is alot easier to work on than fuel injection especially if the emissions bull crap is gone, now if its a 4 speed it might not get as good milege without the overdrive though

Yeah, that's definitely true about them being easier to work on. I've had other carbureted vehicled before but they were all american V8's and I can't even inagine what a 4cyl with a carb must be like lol.

While I do prefer the RE, all of my 22Rs were (seemingly) as peppy. In a two wheel drive it'll be much better. I drove an auto 2WD around for a while, the 4 speed was a lot more fun. I bet you'll fall in love with it...

Worst case scenario, you can sell it to me.

I get 20 avg and 22/23 highway
In a lifted 81 22r 4x4 on 33s with 4.88s.

IMO the 22r is about the easiest to work on. I never worked on a carbed version, but I think it would be the same as a EFI..just sometimes less

So far my truck gets between 17-20mpg..but my foot is always in it. Maintain it correctly and don't beat it up and you'll have a very reliable truck.

I prefer the trucks with a carburetor ,they are easier to work on, cheaper parts and mine was getting around 23 dirt roads/hwy and 27 on trips. That was before I started adding weight to the truck.

VERY easy to to work on.
As far as expectations, expect to be out in the middle of cold nowhere not worrying about your motor having issues.
I use to own a Jeep and I thought part of 4 wheeling was breaking down in the middle of nowhere every time I went out. Then I bought a Toyota and I don't even think about issues when I am wheeling.

LOL, to answer the question in your title...not much. Peppy isn't word I'd use to describe my truck and I only get 14 mpg in town. You can throw a lot of money at these engines and still not get V6 performance out of them.

yes, they are reliable engines....until the HG fails. The you rebuild it and it reliable again.

I will echo what other folks have said, they are easy to work on, actually pretty fun for the most part.

i know a guy who has a 87 p/u 2wd 4spd bare bones truck, 22r with only like 107k...

i was absaloutly suprised at how quick it was, not saying it was ready for the drag strip, but hell it will blow away my 22re (thats not saying much though) and keep up with my 3vz if it had to

I have owned other trucks with the 22RE, my main focus is just to see how that compares to the non injected 22R that's in this truck.

I hadn't thought about that 85gijunk4x4, being only 2wd it has a simpler drivetrain and is lighter so it might actually prove to be a little less sluggish than my 4x4s regardless of the carb or not.

compared to the 22re, i dont think its that much of a difference at all, granted emissions will be a whole different story.

compared to a 4x4, deffinatly quicker, less maintanence, and handles alittle bit better (though lighter = doesnt grip the road as good)
