Need some good advice on a 22-re problem

Only thought on that one is a possibly inaccurate thermostat(meaning you've somehow got a stant or something that opens at 160-170), which CAN cause problems, as these trucks like to run a lil warmer, ....around 1/3rd. Seeing that it's no longer frigid in Missouri, I would assume it's not a matter of the weather, ....and even then, the motor should warm the coolant to whatever temp 'the thermostat allows'(within reason- Some much lower temps might cause it to run low on the scale, but I mean like 40's and 30's and such. It was 48* here the other night, Hertz, and my truck ran RIGHT AT 1/3, as always.
With coolant temp sensors, I believe they come on when the coolant is at 86*(Thook?) in most first Gen EFI's. The thermostat should open at 180*, I believe, as the 'Dealership Counter, OEM model calls for', ..and yes, it could just be your gauge or temp sender(mine is on the thermostat housing, I believe, unlike some other 1st Gens--not sure of the years, but I 3 think 86 doesn't have one on top of the housing, only in the Intake right up near the head-middle intake). One way to check the coolant temp at the CTS or CSI is to put a meat thermometer right up to the coolant temp sensor housing(Same way you check for operational resistance of the CSI Time Switch, as the temp drops, the resistance should change according to FSM in the CSI time switch). I know Thook has posted this, but I pointed it out because, ....I seem to remember you saying that your "Haynes" didn't cover that 'Coolant Temp Sensor' test, .... mine does. Even better is the "Exegen Temporal Thermometer", ...but not if you have to buy one, hahaha.

The coolant temp sensor MOST DEFINITELY can cause some of what you're experiencing. "Performance?" HECK YEAH! There are SEVERAL sensors that can cause this. I though you'd replaced the Coolant Temp sensor, but can't remember, Hertz. Maybe it's time for a quick list, 1., 2., 3., one on top of the other to the left, to categorize what you've done, not done, replaced, etc., ...right? Can't hurt to tinker, sir! Just don't break anything, hehehe.
Those that seem the most common in causing issues with the acceleration and power?
1. CTSensor
2. 02Sensor
3. TPS
4. AFM
5. ECU
6. Injectors
7. CSI or Time Switch itself
8. Dizzy or ignition issues(Air Gap, Pick up, Ignitor, Plugs, Wires, Coil, Secondary)
9. Fuel Pump
10. WIRING TO ALMOST ANY OF SAID ITEMS!
List what you've done, replaced, readings you've verified at items or ecu or both, etc., after a short paragraph of EXACTLY what it does, Hertz... Remember, many people just stay away due to having to read back through an ever growing thread, ...trust me, I know, lol.

Thermostat? Not so much, but it CAN effect how the vehicle runs, as the system is reading coolant temp and deciding how much more/less fuel to add/lean out. Maybe more of a combination? Could just be your gauge giving up the ghost, like mine did.

i still have e stock thermostat in my truck, still works like a charm.. i took it out and boiled it in some water a few months ago.. everything was in par...
i really could care less if the gauge went all the way up...
i just drive the truck for a gas sipper...
no sense to put all those un needed miles on my 2005 f250 h-d edition

Any word from the shop as to the problem?
I was driving to work this morning and once I hit a hill in 3rd gear the engine started cutting out around 3k like it was starving for fuel. Had the timing chain done 150 miles ago, got COMPLETELY screwed on this truck and am all ready sick of sinking money into it. I've only owned it for 200 miles! Incredibly interested as to the solution before I have to start replacing MORE parts. Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing abut it being fuel related, unfortunately I'm workin 60 hours a week, doin school work all mornin before I go to work, and my normal mechanic I trust on Toyota's is 120 miles away back home in VT (where most of my tools are). I don't have time to sleep as it is let alone fix the truck so I was basically looking to narrow things down a bit before I take it to someone in this hellhole city. Still haven't found a mechanic around here I trust! My situation sounded similar to ehertz's and was just curious if he'd found a solution.

VT, you don't need much time, just a multi-meter, to check the operation of your TPS, AFM, Coolant Temp Sensor, CSI and CSI Time Switch, 02Sensor, Grounds.... And then you can borrow a vacuum gauge from an Auto Parts Store and run through those. I know how it is, ...very tough to juggle so much and maintain other things... But I'm guessing this is your only rig? If so, you'd better get a Multi-Meter(maybe 25$ max at Radio Shack) and start testing things when you can find 20 Minutes or so, here and there. I fully understand,..that's why I've had to take so long to get to the bottom of my issues. However, barring the fuel pump and filter, you're down to the basic 3; Combustion, Compression, Fuel. See if someone you know has a fuel pressure gauge, ...see if they have a vacuum gauge(and pump... some tests require it), maybe they might have a multi-meter, and you could quickly start to AT LEAST rule things "OUT", know what I mean?
Best of luck,
Mark

PS> VT,
Your sig says 147K.. but the timing chain was done 150k ago? I'm guessing you're going from the point of 'chain replacement', on the miles, correct? That could mean that your injectors, fuel system components, etc., have up to 250K miles on them. You don't have to tear down the entire engine to do a timing chain, ...and I'd bet that, if they didn't, ..you could have an issue with your injectors just not doing their job. That's a bit more tricky to test, ..but you can at least rule out the rest if you get that Multi-meter and vacuum gauge/pump. Any other receipts on 'things done' for this rig?
Maybe start a thread, ...what could it hurt, right?

Not sure what you mean by the coolant sensor "coming on" at 86*. IOW, it comes on as soon as the 5volts are applied to the circuit when you hit the key. Otherwise, if the coolant temp were below 86*, the ECU couldn't do anything to adjust fuel and timing accordingly......particularly on start up.
BTW, I said before (about the coolant sensor) that usually it's running problems when they go out. I should've probably said when they start going out. This is because before they actually burn out and create an open circuit situation, they start building up in resistance enough that usually you will first notice running issues. They can get bad enough that will make it very difficult to start the vehicle, if you can start it at all.

Mark, no that was 150 miles ago, as in 1/2 tank of gas. Guy I work with's kid did it, laid off mechanic, fixed the e-brake, brake lines, and cat back exhaust too (did it cheap enough, thank you recession). I'll probably talk to him tomorrow or Monday, I just saw the thread when I searched and was curious if he'd found a solution. Thanks for the suggestions, way more info here than toyotanation.

Alrighty then.......here it is. The temp switch on the thermo housing:

Edit: Oops.....looks like the TSB link in the thread is no longer working. I'll have to dig around some more. Might have to get my friend at Toyota to email it to me, again. Nuts.

It comes up at Toyota Dealer as "Thermo-Temperature Time Switch", ...not sure what, exactly, it does, either! lol. Maybe it works in conjunction with the CSI Time Switch? Anywhoooo, let me know, hahaha.
BTW; Yeah, I'm sorry, Thook... My wording isn't always the best, ... I think, from reading what you'd said, that you understand where I was going with that. But, yes, it's more of a 'running' thing, as I found out 100 hours or so before the build was decided.

SWEET, Thook, .... Great thread, I'm going to finish reading it when I get another break. Doing Lobster Mac and My Own Caesar Salad for my sister and her MUNCHOMATIC girlfriends, tonight! hahaha. So funny to watch them, especially with a few glasses of Kendall Jackson or 'otherwise!'. lol.
Back to the sauce, aged cheddar is unforgiving, lol.
Thanks Thook,
Mark

Oh, it was good!
I also brought over some freshly harvested Santa Rosa Sugar Plums.... BY FAR the sweetest I've ever grown. I have pics, ...try to figure out where to post them. lol. I puree the plums and made them "Sugar Plum Bellini's" made with Dreamstone Sparkling Muscato, to go with the Dried Bing Cherry salad on Butter Lettuce with Ruby Red Grapefruit Segment and juice-White wine-Vin Dressing, topped with Candied Pecans and Crumbled Chevre! Some also had the Caesar.....but hey, they said, "Throw something else together? We wanna watch!" hahahaha. 3 Minutes later, "Well, eat it up then!... Wash it down with this!" hahahaha.
OK<> .... I'll stop, Hertz.... SORRY!
