Need some good advice on a 22-re problem

1990.... Can you clarify what you mean? Remove the connectors to the injectors, one at a time, until you see 'no' change in running? .....Or vice versus?
You should hear it clicking away, uninterruptedly, increasing in repetition as the RPM increases. However, they can still be clogged to the point that they pulse, but instead of feeding that cylinder, they blow out the o-ring on the back and just leak past, pssing all over the manifold. Or, they can just find the next path of least resistance, like back into the rail. Or, they can shoot the fuel like a mist, instead of a stream, or even to either side.
I did a noid test on #2 but MANNNNNNNNNN it was a PITA to get that connector clip off. Once I did, I just hooked up a noid light from Kragen Rental Set(I believe it was the Ford Probe Noid...they don't have an import set, but one will fit, ya know?). Then, I put a mirror behind it and looked from inside the cab as I feathered the throttle. It pulsed, ....which meant it was something else... which ended up being what I've described, above...*something broke free from within the rail or line between the filter and rail and landed right in #2 injector, forcing it shut-stuck* PS> NOID TEST IS FREE! lol.
First things first...
*How new/old is the fuel filter and pump?
* Can you hear each injector pulsing when you stick a screwdriver to it and then in ear?(You need to give it throttle to see if it cuts out as well).
* Just so you know, the Injector treatment in the tank is not a bad thing, ....but if you're having that much of a powerband issue, they might just be in need of servicing by now, along with a good cleaning of the plenum, Throttle body and so forth.(MINE WERE COMPLETELY filled with crap... you can see it on my build thread below in red, in my sig). Again, ...first you need to figure out how old your fuel filter is...etc. You can have brand new injectors and with a clogged filter.... well, you get the point, lol.
Not sure if a failing pump can cause your issues. Maybe, if it's heading south, it might not provide enough fuel pressure for 'LOADS', where the pressure is much higher than at idle or low RPM in 3rd, already cruising along. HOWEVER: They go out FAR LESS frequently than fuel filters.
Sorry if you've mentioned it, but i couldn't find it. I know that 'kid' did work on it quite a bit.....but did he change out the fuel filter? Especially when a car is sitting for a long period of time, this is CRUCIAL. (this was sitting, right?) Sorry, busy and can't remember off top of head, lol.

IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but first to recap
Thread Summary:
I have an 1986 4runner I bought with a failed timing cover. truck was not running. So far I have replaced the timing cover, chain, chain gears, head gasket, head has been decked and checked, new hoses.
After the ohaul the truck ran great after getting the timing right. It idled great and ran better than the previous 2 4runners I have owned. I took the truck on a 40 mile test drive. It ran perfect until I almost got home. When revving the motor at high RPMs the motor falls flat on its face. It is almost like having a rev limiter. When the motor is cold I can drive it around for about 30 minutes or so before the problem becomes so bad that I can barely put my foot on the gas before it stalls out.
So far I far done the following to try and fix the problem:
New Fuel pump, fuel filter, adjusted the valves, ran lucas oil treatment through tank, New plugs/wires, replaced PCV valve, checked and rechecked for loose connections, new TPS, new AFM and had valves rebuilt.
There are many threads dealing with similar issues. The problem is that most of them are open ended with the threader never revealing what the problem was. I am finding out that this is a fairly commong issue, and I will post until I find the problem and SUM it up for future readers to learn from.
Any suggestions are very welcome!
After taking to a local auto mechanic he found a few minor vacum leaks by doing a smoke test, including the EGR. The main cause....dirty gas tank!!!!! I had attempted to clean the tank myself. I dropped it found I could not fit my arm inside so I did my best by swishing gas around and dumping it out. I repeated that several times and thought I had done a sufficiant job. I also replace the fuel pump and filter at that time. Apparently I had not done a good job!!! Mechanic said there were large chucks of rust etc. in my filter and that led him to the tank, which still had crud in it. He used a toilet brush and scrubbed the inside of the tank. He then used muriatic acid to clean the tank, later neutralizing that with vinegar. He replaced the fuel filter (again) and problem solved. I am glad I took it in...it was hard to give up and do, but because I had already been in the tank and thought it was fine I would likely of not dropped it a second time and spent more money elsewhere trying to track down this problem. So in the end the truck runs GREAT!!! With everything that has been done to it I hope it stays that way for a long time.
Thanks so much Chef, Thook and the others who contibuted ideas. I hope this thread may help others with similar issues. Anyhow....gotta go drive!!!! Thanks guys!

Cottage Cheese Rust in the Tank....getcha every time! hahaha. It's funny, Hertz, how, so often, when we(at least I) read through a thread, seeing that someone has 'DONE' something already.... It almost NEVER enters my mind again. How did he figure that out? Was he doing a fuel pressure test and found some goopidy gunk flying out of it? Or did you just need a new filter....again? hahaha. Wow, AWESOME! I'm really happy for ya, Hertz!
My pleasure to help, if I was any, lol.

....Ok, now, IF ONLY I find that to be my problem! hahaha.

Yeah, well even if it isn't, I'll take you up on that cigar there, bubba!
I've got a Honduran churchill in the refrigerator I've been saving for a special occasion. When, I get finished doing what all want to do with my '86, that sucker's gettin' torched.....
