Muffler/Exhuast Set Up

I'm finally getting new exhaust on my '86 4Runner (22re) and am trying to decide what muffler and size piping to use.

I've searched and a lot of people using 2" pipe to the muffler and then 2.25" out of the muffler. Others use 2.25" to 2.5". Is one set up considered better than the other? Why?

Also, it dosn't look like Flomaster and Magnaflow offer a muffler with a different inlet and outlet size. I'd have to get one with a 2" inlet and 2" outlet (or 2.25"). How will carrying the same size piping all the way through affect sound and power?

As far mufflers go, I'm looking at Dynomax, Magnaflow and Flomaster. Dynomax is cheap but backordered to all hell. But its also the only brand of the three that offeres differing inlet and outlet sizes.

As far as Flomaster, who has a 40 series and who has a 50 series? Which do you like better?

Thanks for help!

go for the 40 series all the way. Best muffler by far and lifetime warrenty. As for piping are you doing a catback setup or manifold back? Are you gonna use the stook manifold? Are you haveing a shop do it? I dont know wherer your located but the setup i run (dont have smog tests) is 2.25 from a lc header to a flowmaster with no cat. Sure its loud as heck but but if you want it more mellow get a carsound cat (makes magnaflow cats) and you have a great system. AAS for pipe size soem peope lus 2 others use 2.25 i dont think there is much difference personally. Also ebay is by far the best place to get flowmasters. the one i got and the one i got a friend wwere both 50 bucks a peice.

on my 22re i had a full 2.25'' all they way back to a delta 40 and it was loud which was great but after a header it made it deeper which was even better if you want it a little quieter go for a 18'' magnaflow muffler check out www.hottexhaust.com

When you say the 40 sounds loud does it sound throaty or more ricey?

I'm doing a cat back, but want to make the inlet to the muffler a larger than stock size in case I someday want to expand the piping right out of the manifold. I'm using the stock manifold. I'm having a shop do the work as well and am located in CA, so I need a cat for smog.

Another question I had was about where to dump the exhuast? Are there any CA regualtions on dumping it before the axle and/or not off to the side of the truck?

if you are paling to change it up later i would buy a 2.25 in and out muffler and just put reducers down to 2 inch on both ends. that what you can mount it up and change it later. They is no point in goign bigger than 2 inch if its just a cat back. but ya i would just do a 2inch system but buy a 2.25 muffler and put reducers on it so you coudl reuse the muffler later.

i am not aware of the ca laws abotu dumping it befor the axlebut i was going to recomend this. It is alot cheaper to have it done this because it doesnt require any bending.

the 40 sounds nice and deep. Not ricey.

Personally I like a quality header and a cheap exhaust... Course, in CA things might be different.

Found this - pretty good - photos / wav files, etc:

So for a final set up after this cat back job I'd have 2.25" piping from the stock manifold to a high flow cat to a 40 series Flowmaster to a 2.25" dump. The other day I was talking to a guy at Midas about my exhaust ideas and he said 2.25" is too big for an old (196,000 miles) 22re. Does he know what hes talking about? Thanks for the ebay idea, saving money is always awesome

i'm running 2.25 throughout, from a NWOR header. i have the 50 series delta flowmaster (ebay for 55). i don't like the highway drone (my sound system isn't up to par yet) from a louder muffler. mine has a throaty sound when you punch it, but basically is much quieter than the 40. personal taste.
can't say whether you need a different pipe size, but a header, exhaust and airbox mod are the cheapest way to get a real power rush out of these 22re's.

A larger sized pipe after the muffler is supposed to give the sound a deeper tone and sound less ricey.

I have 2.25" pipe to a 14" magnaflow and then 2.5" out the back and it sounds pretty good. It's louder than what I wanted but it has grown on me. It's still quieter than titicaca's flowmaster 40, and very similar in tone. I actually think the flowmaster 40 sounds a little better but holy ˟˟˟˟˟ it's loud.

All of your backpressure is created from the pipe to the muffler, the tailpipe after the muffler is just for routing and sound. I actually wish I had done 3" after the muffler for an even deeper note, but it isn't worth going back. It sounds good now and it made a huge difference in the power of the truck and the driveability. Well worth the money and I wish I had done it years ago. It made the truck fun to drive again.

I had a vid of how mine sounded but I think I deleted it. I'll look around.

If I had to do it again, I'd do an 18" magnaflow instead of the 14", and probably do 2.25" to the muffler and 3" out the back.

Does the Flomaster 40 drone out music on the freeway? I don't have thaaat good of a stereo and I depend on it for frequent long drives.

Ovrrdrive, where did you find a magnaflow with a 2.25 inlet and 2.5 outlet?

Mine's a 2.5/2.5...

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=435

With a 2.5" inch inlet, the 2.25" slides right in and a little welding makes it airtight, then on the outlet they just expanded a piece of 2.5 and used it as a slipjoint.

I found my video clip... It gives the inside the truck sound but no driveby. It sounds different outside the truck...

I don't think mine counts, but:
2.5" down pipe out of the turbo (mandrel):

2.5" downpipe.

2.5" exhaust system.. Generic high-flow catalytic converter.. No muffler right now, but a turbo keeps it pretty quiet...

If you can weld, it's not too hard to do a system on a truck/4runner..

I run a LCE header, 2.25" cat, 2.25" flowmaster 60 series, 2.25" to the tip. I have had a similar setup on both my 22re's (my 95 didnt have a cat... bad idea, and was a downey header).. . but the combo worked great. More responcive across the board, and freeed up some extra power...
