I have a 1994 Toyota Pickup SR5, ive recently bought. The other day I was driving and I noticed my radiator fan would come on for about 2 mins loud then cut off the come back on loud. When I give it gas it gets louder. This is my firs yota. Is this normal?

 

My '95 4Runner does this when it's hot enough out. It's a sign that the fan clutch is working as designed.

 

ok, its been in the mid to high 90s in Louisiana. wasn't sure if I needed to worry or it was normal. I just ordered me a new fan clutch thinking that was the problem, but guess ill just have a spare.

 

Yes, sound will get stronger when air flowing across fan clutch gets hot. However, I would inspect for smooth turning and mounting security. Also...:

Check your shroud top and bottom and make sure it's not broken.

 

It just seems it kicks on a lot and its pretty loud. The truck never over heated or got to a point to where it was about to over heat. My drive to work is about 17 mins all HWY. It came on aleast 6 times, I just find that's a lot. I don't know maybe im worrying to much LOL, it just stood out to me. When I bought it I didn't notice it.

 

I would think that's pretty normal for summertime in Louisiana. Mine cycles on and off quite frequently if it's hot, I'm running the AC, and/orI'm traveling fairly slowly (backroads or city stop and go.) The truck never overheats, though. I think you're good. And yes, it's pretty loud. That's the sound of a lot of air moving, which is why these trucks never overheat unless something is wrong.

Pretty sure this here joke about that elusive lower fan shroud cover is what caused the laughter.

 

I actually replaced my fan shroud a few years ago. Cost $40 online and fit perfectly. Made no noticeable difference in cooling, but felt good to do.

 

Bummer it made no difference. Word on the street is it's designed to help at low speeds or sitting in traffic.

Have you done a coolant flush? First time I drained mine (especially from the block drain plug) there was all sorts of nasty in there, probably blocking things up.

 

What I didn't say is that it was cooling just fine without the shroud, so there wasn't really a problem to solve. I just figured the shroud would give me more margin. But, I don't usually sit in traffic for long periods in hot weather, either.
