Looking to buy

Hello everyone. I’m a newbie here and am looking to buy an xtracab, 4x4, 5sp, with the 22RE. I’ve owned several Tacoma’s and an FJ40, but never the pickup/Hilux.

I have found a ‘94 model that is just like I was looking for. It’s an xtracab, 4x4, 5sp, with the 22RE, and 131,000 miles. It’s a one owner vehicle that has never been off-roaded. The guys wife drives it as a DD short distance to work. It had a clutch change about 4-5 years ago and runs well, doesn’t use oil.

I did notice that the front fenders right behind the front tires where they tie into the rockers are rusted out and the rear bumper is rusted out. The hood also looks like I would want to replace it due to a couple dents.

My question is what is this vehicle worth? Is there anything else I should be asking about or looking at? He’s asking $3400 but I figure I can get it less with cash.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

$3,400 is not bad. However, you want to check for rust in the frame. Thats the weakest link in the 90's pickups. If the frame is rusted out, then it's not worth it IMO

Agreed. Some panel rust is ok. Frame rust not so much. And some surface rust is not what we are talking about. Watch for rust that has corroded the surface through.

But even the panel rust is lots of work to fix.

To my knowledge, the 1st gen pickups came with a 20R engine.
If you're looking for a 22RE, you'll have to swap one in.

what year did the change from the 20R to the 22R take place and what year did they go from the 4sp to the 5sp? Was ‘79 and ‘80 the 20R and 4sp then in ‘81 they went to the 22R and 5sp? The 1st gen were all carbureted which I’m ok with. My old FJ40 had a Weber on it and it ran great. Is there much difference between the 20R and 22R? Besides a little more displacement, I mean? Reliability?
