A couple tire choices...

Hey this is my first post and my first Toyota! I just bought a 1994 Toyota Pickup, 5sp, 4x4, 22re. So far it is an amazing truck but it is in need of some tires real bad, so...

....here is what we are looking at so far...

Federal COURAGIA M/T 31x10.50 R15 109R 6PR OWL

I am very hesitant to buy these because i cannot find a review about these anywhere!

Maxxis Bighorn Mud Tires LT 31 10.50 R15 6 Ply

These ones look good too but again i cannot find a review besides on a dealers website.

Dunlop Radial Mud Rover 31x10.5"

These have the best ratings so far, but they just dont have the look I'm looking for

any other suggestions are gladly appreciated!

Where did you buy them?

I should also note that I have about a $500 budget.

I bought them from a independent tire shop in town. So there was no shipping, unlike if you bought from online....

I paid around $560 for the tires and mount and balance, so I guess the tires were around $500....

Just read the 500 limit...so you can disregard the BFG M/T's.

Interco Trxus M/T's are a pretty good tire. I ran them for about 20K miles and they were good tire. Mine were great in the rain though.

Maxxis big horns are used alot by the kids at my school. Heard nothing but good things about all of them as far as performance in the mud.

Matt is very right though, you get what you pay for. You buy crappy tires and ur gonna get a crappy ride. Might just wanna save up a little more and go with something better.

I got a good deal on a set of

Cooper STT's
http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/...RSTT060405.JPG

They came in at half the cost of the BFG mud's that i was planning on buying but that kind of deal may be hard to find.

If I hadn't bought the mastercraft's I'd have bought the Cooper's....both are great tires.

And as some of you have mentioned, you get what you pay for, but I can tell you what you're getting with the big name tire companies (not that cooper isn't big)....THE NAME, they gotta pay for all those 2 page spreads in the 4x4 mags. They're certainly good tires, but overpriced for sure.

Sometimes the price is quality based, sometimes it is based on the cost of advertising, most often it is a little bit of both. But the way I look at it if I pay half price and they wear less than twice as quick I’m still up. (All other things being equal or at least close to).

They are great in the snow, rain, mud, the grip is incredible (big change from what the PO had on it before) pretty noisy on highway but quieter than studded car tires. I had them for a little over a month now and no complaints.

All the tires suggested are good tires for your budget...

They all have pretty good reputations, and should be good tires.

Keep in mind the more aggressive the tread, the louder on the hwy, the worse the ride, etc...

Are you looking for a mud tire? Dirt? Street? What category will help with guiding you towards a good selection. Like the TRxUS are great, but may be too loud, or the coopers won't be the best choice if you see a lot of mud...

Welcome to yotatech, by the way. Glad to have you with us.

why do you say this? they basically have the same tread as the bfg muds, each grove in between lugs is the size of the lug so they clear mud very fast.

Im sure theres better like a super swamper with a tread pattern that looks like a paddle wheel.

i wasn't reffering to the STT

The AT is a good on/offroad tire for a good price. Not so good in mud.

if you can wait a month or 2 and get the BFG MTs they are awesome tires. like already stated you get what you pay for... you can cry once, or cry every time. (cry at the large initial cost, or go cheap and cry every time you use it)...

oh welcome to yotatech. your truck and wallet will never be the same..

Are you looking for a mud tire, street tire or AT tire?

I've got 33-12.50 Goodyear Wranglers AT's (with the Kevlar belts) on my 89 FJ62 and I love them!

The look is aggressive, the ride (daily driver) is smooth and quiet and the handling is superb!!!

They work well in wet weather and in soft sand. Haven't had them in the mud yet, but from the look of the thread and my previous experience in 35+ years of driving, is that they should do "ok" in moderate mud. They won't clean as well as a strictly mud terrain tire or mudder, but they look like they won't mud up as quickly as a street tire either.

Not bad for the price and I'm very happy with mine.

As others have said, if you buy specifically "cheap" you may regret the ride, noise, handeling and other aspects of the tire.

I'm not sure what they'll run in your size or where you will purchase them?

If you have an Allied Tire Store near you, check them out. They have a 12 month no interest, same as cash deal going on that is pretty sweet!!!

Another thing to keep in mind is there are only a few tire manufacturers. A lot of the "no name" and off brand tires you see are made by the major companies and re-branded as whatever.

Used to work as a kid at a place called Woolco, sort of a K-mart kinda thing.

They had a line of tires specific to thier company and sold through Ameron Automotive.

These tires were actually GoodYear tires!!! but at a much lower price

Good luck with your purchase and from one newbie here to another, welcome aboard

Talking

Well thanks for the help guys... I ended up getting the Maxxis Bighorn Mud Tires. They were around $170-180 a piece from the dealer and I ended up finding a set of four for $478... so I can't complain. It's only a start, I'm sure I will learn a lot through experience and through you guys and maybe once I finish college will be able to afford some BFG's M/T's.

Unless you're willing to do some work for them.

Go to any tire store and get a quote for 4 tires. Ask for a printed invoice. Take said invoice to another tire store with a "price beat gaurantee." Have them quote you and print and invoice. Take that invoice to another "price beat gaurantee" store (i.e. Sears, Costco) and see if they will beat that price. Eventually, you will get to a point where they will not be able to sell the tires to you because it will cost them. But, you're assured the lowest price.

I did this with my REVOS and ended up paying $127/tire for 285/75/16. Best price on TireRack.com at the time was $176.
