help wont start

So i took my 4runner off road today and went through some water no deeper than the bottom of the bumper. Anyways the first time i went through it it felt like it lost some power when i went through it. the trail got narrow so i had to turn around and go through it again. This time it back fired and died. I started up again and on the way home and it had no power unless you stomped on it and let it down shift. Got home washed it off and tried to start it and, it fires up for a split second and dies.
I think it is in the ignition and i figured somthing is just wet so i took the dist. cap off and and it was dry. this is as far as i got hoping that watever it is will dry out and it will start.

-any one have any clue what exactly is doing this? (its a v6 automatic)
thanks.

try checking to see if the air filter got wet, if it did it might throw off the maf.you might also check the plug wires.

You ran water through the intake

pull your plugs, crank the engine till you blow the water out, put new plugs in, cross your fingers.

uhhh...
his truck runs, so he didnt hydro lock it.

i would let everything dry off.
my truck does this too, and usually the air-filter is saturated with a bit of moisture so it cant get the needed amount of air.
pull the air cleaner and let it dry. and check for moisture too.

Ok so tried again today and it does the same thing. Pulled the connector to the maf and it runs for about 3 seconds instead of the usuall one second plugged in.

Can any one make sence of this?

Yes and no. Yes, there is likely a default setting in the ECU for the AFM inputs, but the AFM also keeps the fuel pump running, so no AFM = no fuel pump:

Ok.... The AFM is required for your truck to run. If it is not working properly the truck will have drastic driveabliity issues. Take the intake tube off and clean it out. New air filter. Look into the throttle body.... you see and water or mud? Clean it out. Any engine codes? Year? Truck? Model? Engine? Check belts. Alternator? Vacc leaks? You should not take your truck into deep water like that much. Especailly if it a daily driver. Up to the bumper could have had it get alittle sucked in the intake. If your knowledgeable you can check your AFM to see if its good. Take it off the air box and see if its dirty inside? Flapper door still moving and not sticking? Should spring back to close everytime you let go of it from open. You can do a test for resistance if you have a haynes manual or look up directions for AFM testing. If it test out of spec in any area its "Technically Bad" and needs replacing.

ok its been a week or two and ive been trouble shooting. Ive replaced the afm and it starts and ran. i thought it was ok until i drove it and it is low on power and some times will even sputter untill i floor it, but once it runs for a while it seems to get better. so it seems like the mid rpms under load is where it gives me trouble. i put the old afm back on for s and gigles and it seems about the same as the new one. i also put a new tps on and no go. ive checked for vac leaks, replaced filter, new afm, and tps.
im running out of ideas and starting to lose hope. some one please shed some yotatech wisdom on me
