Noticed my small puddle of coolant under my truck the past few days which I believe is coming from the seal on the bottom of my radiator. Going to pull it out and really check it out. I'll probably try to epoxy/JB weld it, depending if its a crack or pinhole, but assuming that won't work.. Does anyone know of any good replacements besides throwing down $300 on an OEM?

I've found this one I can get for $80.. Anyone running this?

I would NOT get one of those Spectra aluminum/plastic radiators as they are junk. I went through 2 of them a couple years ago and kept getting leaks at the top where the plastic crimps onto the metal.

Then I ordered a 2 row all metal one from http://www.radiatorbarn.com/search.php?product=radiator and it's held up great for the last 2 years and 40K miles or so. It was direct fit as well.
It looks like the prices have gone up considerably as I paid about $140 2 years ago but I think it's still worth it.

 

Good to know, Just did some more research on them and saw alot of people having trouble with them.

Well so far that 2 row metal one looks good so far. How long did shipping take you?

 

I honestly don't remember but probably less than a week, I know it came pretty quick.

 

I also got one from Radiator Barn all metal .

Shipping was pretty quick.

Fit up was great it just bolted right in.

I have mine repaired. OEM is far superior to most aftermarket ones, especially older Toyotas as they are all metal.

Wabbit in your neck of the woods Radiator shops must work really cheap.

If it is a simple repair just a cracked tank or at the filler neck by all means fix it.

Since most original radiators from eighties Toyota vehicles at least up in the salt belt are in need of having the cores replaced the cost of having this done here for lets say a 88 22rec 4x4 pick up was over $300.00 in parts and labor

I had looked at getting one fixed it had to be cleaned but the tubes were just to weak

Bought a brand new one with a warranty for life for less then $150.00 from the radiator shop.

This guy and I both lusted after the same girl way back when so we have known each other a long time.

 

Radiator shop I use is typically $50 for finding the leak, fixing, cleaning and a fresh cost of paint. All they do is radiators and repair gas tanks. Old man has been in business long time.

I'm needing a radiator too. The PO used JB weld to hold the top line 'neck' on & the nipple that goes to the overflow is broke off. My situation is a bit different, though. When we go to the ranch(3 hrs. from home) it's in the middle of nowhere(and over 21K acres). Closest town is 25 miles away(we do have a Jeep I can use to go to town if NEED be). If my new radiator craps out on me wouldn't it be better to get 1 from a local auto parts store so I can exchange it or should I be fine ordering on-line? Also, is the 1 from radiatorbarn.com worth twice as much as the one from O'reilly or VatoZone?

 

I have a Davez offroad one. Steel construction, 3 row radiator. good product.

 

The PO JB Welded the upper neck on my radiator & the nipple for the overflow reservoir is broke off. Just went to the local radiator shop to get a quote to have the neck taken off, a new one welded on & the nipple welded on. He said $20 & it's only take him 10 minutes!!!! Saved me $200!
Have it checked out by your local radiator shop before you drop the coin on a new one!

x2. i have a davez offroad radiator also. the 3 core all metal rad is workin good so far. i have just over 300 miles on the 5vz swap and everthing is cool. i did have to slot the mounting holes so the cap would clear the hood,no body lift for me.

 

I've replaced two of them with OEM replacements from NAPA. No I didn't replace two on the same vehicle....

 

@slacker that rad looks nice, just like the one i got except the cap is where it's supposed to be. that is one awesome lookin 83. i had a 79 that i put an 83 bed,front clip, tilt wheel and a bunch of other nice stuff. i still have the buick v6 turbo engine i was gonna put in it. my first yota. the one that made me a yota man.

 

That does look like a good radiator from what I can tell in the pics,It's not all steel though. The only part that's steel is the sidebrackets. The tanks,headers,and tubes are brass,and the the fins are copper. You don't really want anything else to be steel unless it's a big CAT radiator in a really harsh environment,then you want flat steel fins (or heavy copper).

 

I was bombing through the woods with my yota and took a stick straight through it. Took out 6 or seven rows of cooling line, Prepped it and patched with JB weld and it held for over a year! didn't cool all that well but if you take your time prepping the repair area, it should last for quite a long time.
