Gears can be a PITA, and if not set up right will not last very long at all. Would definatly have somone do them for you.

By far the best way to change gears if you're going back to stock is to find some used diffs in good shape. You should be able to get a good 3rd for about $100-150 and the same for a front diff. If you're looking for aftermarket gears I'd say find a good shop ,but to go back stock used 3rds are plentiful and cheap.

The pinion in his 3rd is setup for his gears.. you cant just slide a new differential into the 3rd member.. you need a new pinion.

Lets not get the terms confused.

3rd member (entire housing that the Differential is in) .. Differential is what allows the tires to spin at different speeds (3 spider gears). Differential CASE (or called a carrier) is what the ring gear and spider gears go IN.

You COULD do the gears yourself but you need a few tools, A dial indicator, some kind of Special Service tool or homeade tool to tighten the carrier bearings. I don't reccomend using a screw driver. Some gear paint and a lot of patience...

Then you gotta decide on using a crush sleeve or a solid sleeve with shims.

.008" backlash is spec.

I have a set front and rear slide in 3rd in carriers with 4.10s if you need them should only take a few hours to install both ends.Front is an a.d.d. set up and still in working condition I just swaped out for a non a.d.d. front end. Let me know if your interested and I make you a sweet deal so good you cant even get a gear set and install kit for the price but you got to pay shipping. Oh yea got a lockright(125miles $250 brand new) for the rear as well and will reinstall if you want it 400.00 for the set with lockright installed you pay shipping.

I'm looking for a factory rear 3rd 4.10 for a V6... around the atlanta area. I just sold mine and I'm thinking that was a bad idea. PM me if you have one sitting around. Thanks, David
