Hey guys, Just purchased a 1986 22re 4cy. 5 sp. w/170xxxx. Will post pics very soon. I'm having an issue with fuel leaking out of the fuel filter overflow hose which is located on the passenger side front top fender area. If i don't tighten the fuel fill cap and leave it slightly open to release pressure the leak stops. I'm very concernd about a fire starting because of this. Any advise, thanks...

 

never heard of a fuel filter overflow hose .. how about some pics ..

 

I might be wrong about it being the filter. To be specific its the charcoal cansister (coffee can size) on the passenger side of the upper front fender area in the engine compartment. There is a hose which looks like an overflow and if the gas cap is closed tight fuel leaks out of it. I'm afraid that with a spark from the battery can cause a fire. HELP....

 

What about a new vented fuel cap?

okay I just comfirmed that it is not the fuel filter but the cansister with two vent lines on top. One coming from the throttle body and the other goes to the fuel tank. The bottom hose which i think is a fresh air vent. The bottom is ware the fuel leaks from, but like i said it leaks when the gas cap is closed tight (normal) building pressure and the leak starts. How do i stop this? Thanks for the replys....

It sounds to me but without seeing the truck it is only a guess !!!

One of the hoses is on the wrong port and is drawing more vacuum then it should and instead of fumes it is pulling the liquid gas

I had one that did this the last owner had the hoses all screwed up so unless someone had been tinkering blind folded this should not be the problem.

It also could be a bad fuel cap the vent in the fuel cap is calibrated to open when the fuel tank vacuum reaches a certain point. to keep liquid gas being drawn into the canister.

There is also a check valve on the Charcoal canister that serves a similar function.

I would lean more towards the later two problems.

Get a new fuel cap see if that fixes the problem

 

It's (almost certainly) not the fuel cap. The vent in the fuel cap allows air in (when the vapors cool), but it does NOT let vapors out. (Those are pollutants.) That's the purpose of the canister; to pick up the excess vapors pushing out of the warm tank.

There should never be liquid fuel entering the canister (here's a drawing for a '93: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/engine/17evaporat.pdf). But it is possible that the purge port is not working. Your canister is filling up with vapors, it is never getting emptied, and it is now full of liquid fuel dripping out. (Just a guess.)

Work through the diagnostics in the manual (that link, if backed up, will take you to an '88 manual). Be sure your purge line is connected to something (in the '93 the connection is to the TVV, which is a fragile part often broken at this age ... I'm not sure of the set up in the '86).

And like the others said, this is worth fixing sooner rather than later. Much sooner.

 

The two hoses that are connected to the charcoal canister are probably crossed, easy to do as they are the same size, and hook up to similar metal tubes next to each other. Try switching those (on the actual hard line side) and it should quit leaking fuel.

 

Hi,do you have aire suction in ... wen you open your gas cap? if yes i ad the same problèm on a 4runner 1990 in I find the trouble westerday on my 1994 4runner 3vz it was a check valve on the gas tank vent not the return on the sending unite tey outher one with the four screw take't out in see the check vavle also inside the hose thers a litel air filter very litel 1/4 inch x 3/4 long take't out and replace by a small shainsaw gas fiter .
