exhaust through rear window

I put a new full exhaust on my 88 4runner about a month and a half ago and I am still getting exhaust through the rear window when it is down and now I never have it down anymore. The old exhaust did this too and I thought it was a leak in the pipe, but it still seems to come in when the rear window is down. The pipe comes out right behind the drivers side rear tire. I tightened all bolts on the flanges and the rest is fully welded up, anyone have any ideas or is anyone else having this problem? Thanks!

They all do it. Its why toyota added a rear wind deflector to the 90+ 4Runners.

Yep. The only other solution to that is leave your window up or get use to the smell.

Try experimenting with how far you lower the window. On my '85, I found how far I could open the glass before pulling in exhaust on the road. Usually could get it down a few inches and it was OK. And add a wind deflector in back, will also help keep dust and snow off the rear window as well:

Also cracking the sliding windows open a bit helps.

I think the only real solution is the wind deflector.

I was thinking about trying to point the exhaust down or move it up in front of the rear tires, just an idea has anyone else tried this with good results!

lol!! my wife hates this! we just had this discussion during our last drive. by the time we were done she had a headache from the fumes. i thought about cutting the exhaust off right behind the muffler to see if that kept it "below" the window level, but didn't know if that would work.

I have mine cut just after the axle and still get a bit if I'm driving below 25mph and I have the rear deflector on mine. I've noticed that having the rear windows cracked helps, and only rolling down the back 4 or 5 inches.

Getting use to the smell is not an option.

Carbon Monoxide is completely odorless and builds up in your system over time. It requires more time to get out of your system.

so if you cansmell exhaust, you need to correct that right away.
