Downey headers for 3.4L swap q?
For those who have done the swap. I have read here that the EGR mount on the driver side needs to be cutoff b/c it intereferes with the steering shaft and a cover plate needed to be welded in place to close it shut. So, here's my q? If you needed an EGR, where would you put it then? I asked this b/c I will fail my emissions without this thing since I would get a relatively high Nox reading.
Thomas (Tragic Drive) had it done on his swap and he lives in Md. I dont know exactly what their emissions there in Md but I live in VA (NoVA to be exact).
Need help here guys. Thanks.

You are right. The mount needs to be cut off.
First to be certain I would call the local emission authorities to be sure if the EGR valve is needed to pass emissions. When I did my swap the 3.4 engine did not have an EGR setup; but it did on my 3.0.
I can't see how the Downey headers would work w/o mofications because the steering shaft will be touching the EGR mount.

In any case, the mount is very close and often won't work. With the '89 and earlier steering shafts you can usually turn the cap the right direction and bolt it down with just enough clearance. The 90-95 steering shafts make this nearly impossible. Cutting the EGR mount short and capping makes for plenty of room.
If you are officially registering the swap, you will probably need to meet the emissions standards of the 3.4L donor vehicle. If you are just going to test it without saying anything, you'll need to meet your truck's original standards.
Most 3.4L's don't have EGR to start with. One of my 3.4L swaps uses an early California Tacoma engine that originally had EGR. I capped the port on the plenum and deleted the EGR. It runs great and has always passed emissions. In my state (CO), I just tested it like the truck was stock (said nothing) and have had good luck.
Not sure about your situation, but would recommend NOT using EGR if you can, it makes the steering situation easy to resolve. Good luck!

Only certain 97 tacos used the egr system. I was just going thru this on the ecu that I bought for my truck. The 2wd, and the 4wd regular cab did according to the toyota ewd. The extended cab did not for some odd reason. Go to your local dealer with the p/n off of the ecu and ask them what the model number is. vzn170 is the extended cab 4x4 (no egr) and vzn160 is the reg. cab 4x4 (w/egr). I dont recall the 2wd model numbers right now but according to this it doesnt matter either way, both have it on 2wd models.

Well, there's some relief to my problem. Thanks Jason for this info.
I have yet to check with a local dealer whether my ECU is from an extended cab or not. Also, I fetched the ECU from a car-parts.com used parts dealer.
The p/n on mine is 89661-04310.
