darn tranny
Hello all, 1990 toyota 4runner with 22re and 5spd manual. Wife just called said she couldnt shift the truck into any gear. She pulled off the road, turned off the truck, and with the engine off she could shift through the gears. Started back up, got moving in first, went to shift into second, and could not get into any gear again. Pulled off the road and tried one more time, and it was good to go. My fear is the shift forks are getting screwed up. She said the clutch felt fine, and the gears wouldnt grind while she was trying to put it into gear. Anyone have any thoughts? Do I need to start looking for a new tranny?

I highly doubt its the "shift forks"
Sounds like the clutch simply isn't disengaging, due to a failed master cylinder. My master felt just fine when it failed, and I couldn't get it into gear unless the engine was off. Start by making sure the master isn't leaking into the pass compartment, and that the slave is working as well. Have your wife push on the clutch, and watch the slave rod to be sure its pushing on the shift fork. It takes about 1/2"-3/4" movement to disengage the clutch.
If that is working, them you can dig deeper into the tranny.

So the problem went away when you went to drive it? Hmm. The truck doesn't like her. She's doing something wrong to it.

Did you ever figure anything out on this issue? My truck did the same EXACT thing yesterday. I have a brand new slave cylinder and my fluid is all filled up. Looks like the PO put on a brand new master as well.
