CV Boot

Got me a split CV boot, I did a search and found a lot of good info, so I'll be trying the axel replacement myself (I'm not afraid, I'm a big boy now). Anyways I'm really PO'd at the stealership for not informing me about it when they did the relay rod. I mean come on it's right there (bunch of Squids). I was doing my front pads when I noticed it and was amazed at the lack of grease and the appearance of looking like it had been that way for some time. So here the question although I did see some opinions through the search I'd like to confirm. Just coming off WC (cracked ribs) so I'll be delaying this for a short while. What hazards or new problems will arise if I continue to drive street for a couple weeks or should I just let her sit and take the bus (Ick).

Well, there's a lot of people out there who have driven with ripped CV boots for a long time. The danger is that it could freeze up and break something harder to change.

I don't know that I'd park it and take the bus, but I would certainly keep the miles to a minimum.

This is a big reason to install manual hubs. With them unlocked, you could drive forever with a busted CV as it won't be turning.

yup, I went for a while with a torn boot, and then had to make an emergency mud rescue and I just had to duct tape it for the time being...it didn't work but it didn't hurt the axle either.

Hubs sound like a good idea, simple enough to do as well (anyone got a cheap pair). Still gonna go ahead and swap out the axel (looks as if it's never even seen grease). Ticks me off though, so much for my Mc Caslen Mt. run. One more question since I couldn't find a definate answer. If I were to disconnect and plug the ADD vacume lines wouldn't this effectively unlock the hubs for the time being? Having trouble finding an affordable set of hubs heading to the yard tomorrow, who knows maybe I'll get lucky.

The ADD system has nothing to do with the hubs. The hubs unlock the wheel from the CV joint and the ADD system unlocks the front diff from the CV joints.

Ha ha I just finished looking further into the ADD system and functions, and was just about to edit my post. Thanks for the confirmation though.

Yeah, ADD "hubs" are just plates with a splined hole in the middle that lock the wheel to the CV.

I've had a completely torn CV Boot for a long time and put alot of miles on my truck...the mechanic just told me to keep going on it till i hear a clicking sound when i turn then bring it in...cause they replace the axel anyway. does this sound like the right diagnosis? or am i in danger? I've never noticed a problem.

Short term problem, Long term mod

Well problem patched for a few weeks, but the mod is staying. Awesome score a pair of Aisins for $30.00 at the yard. The guy says "what are those?", they've got two more complete sets. Not a bad job to do, took about an hour and some change (whatever you do don't drop the hub those springs really take off). Hopefully I'll be able to run her down to Wautoma and change out the CV assembly in a few weeks. Nice garage for me to use, rotory lift, crane, air tools, welders and a whole lot more. Thanks guys for the info, insight and the great writeups.

Don't need all those tools for a CV change! Just a few wrenches.

Yah I know but I love working there, soo many toys. Biggest problem is when my buddys around doing something on one of his mud draggers I end up spending the whole day and night there workin on his stuff. Not really a problem though I love doin that stuff. Besides if you could use the shop wouldn't you
