I recently had my engine rebuilt and never had a problem with the clutch slipping before the new engine. The shop that did it said the clutch was more then 50 percent when they took the motor out. I climbed under my truck tonight after driving home from work and noticed the plate that covers the transmission was bent out a little bit. So is my clutch getting wet or becoming contaminated due to the little bend in the cover?

That's a reason to replace your clutch when you have an engine rebuild. How long does it slip? The entire time your driving it while it's rainy/wet? Water from it raining shouldn't cause it to slip, even if water is spraying directly onto it, water will only get between the clutch and pressure plate while the pedal is pressed.

 

It only slips when I push the gas pedal more then halfway in 3rd 4th and 5th then if I let off on the gas it grabs. And ya the entire time. It went away for a little while then I went through a big puddle a couple days ago and it started slipping again. I drive 30 miles home on the freeway and it was slipping at all even if I put the gas peddle to the floor. But on the way to work when it was raining it started slipping when I got on it

 

How much pedal do you have left? Thinking it just might be a worn clutch, shouldn't have anything to do with the rain.

 

The clutch pedal? My clutch peddle is pretty firm and grabs about halfway up if not earlier

 

A shop that did not suggest replacing the clutch when the engine was out scares me.

I have installed new clutches with less than 10,000 miles

unless this water getting on your clutch has a very high oil content that it is more oil then water.

It should not cause your clutch to slip a burning clutch is a smell one never forgets.

All those people driving through water would be having problems.

 

It doesn't smell like a burning clutch is the thing that is weird to me. The plate at the bottom of the bellhousing has an inch or so gap on one side and is flush on the other side.the shop said if the clutch looked above 50% they would leave it but if it was below they would replace it. I should have had them replace it I guess he said if I needed a new one they wouldn't charge to install it just the cost of the clutch

 

That's a good deal there. Maybe that bent plate is letting in water and that is your issue, but I would jump at the chance for a new clutch while the offer is out there for free labor. Then while you're at it, replace the bent plate. I thought one of the Toyota vendors had those plates for sale, but I can't find them now.

 

When they had the motor out they said that I guess I could call the guy and see what he says. And i wonder if i can bend the plate back somehow. And if I need a new clutch how difficult is it to replace? I have never done one before. I'm pretty mechanically enclined but not sure is it easy enough to do to save a few hundred bucks on labor?

 

So it's dry this morning and it slipped in second gear the first time and then hasn't slipped again and it doesn't smell like a burning clutch

my wife had the pilot bearing grenade in her truck, PO didn't change the bearing when he did the clutch. Clutch was okay but it would act like it was slipping, ended up replacing everything. think i have pictures somewhere.

 

I haven't smelled the clutch burning up at all and ya that smell isn't a pleasant one

 

How many miles? They do wear out. Mine was noticed to be slipping when I went up to San Francisco to pick up a motorcycle. Hadn't noticed it on the level back in the valley. It became noticeable on moderate acceleration on level. Tje clutch had reached the end of its service life...just like we all will sooner or later. 170,000 miles.

 

It has 50000 as far as I know the previous owner had the clutch replaced 20xxx miles before I bought it. And it has been dry the past couple days and today it hasn't skipped at all yet... I have only driven it a few miles but I was trying to make it slip but couldn't get it to. I am going to be driving on the freeway tonight to work so I'll see if it slips tonight
