Clutch fork clips missing

Hey all, I just installed a partially rebuilt 22RE last night, putting everything back together the way I pulled it apart. My clutch fork is missing, and apparently has been missing the little clips that the FSM calls out. I only had the picker for a night, so I dropped it in anyway, please tell me those clips aren't so important?

I've apparently been running without them for about 25k miles (since the last engine went in) at least. I am planning on doing a full re-build on the engine I just pulled out (the saga continues...) and so when I put it back in it'll be with all the trimmings, new clutch, new head, new everything, including clutch fork clips, but can I get by for 10K miles without the clips or do I need to go rent the picker again and pull it apart?

I feel like your probably just gambling at this point. they are important, because they hold the bearing cup to the fork, but obviously its not preventing you from driving. probably just putting wear and tear at an accelerated rate. I don't see how the bearing would come back like its supposed to without staying on the fork though.

Is there a spring in the clutch fork that pulls the bearing back? Seems like maybe my clutch is even more screwed up than I thought...

Mine doesn't seem to have any real spring, just the tension from the rubber boot. I assumed that the clutch diaphragm pushed it back, but sounds like that is wrong.

the fork just comes off when you let off the pedal, the bearing has to ears on it, and the clips go over the ears and under the fork to attach it, the fork has a clip on the back of it that goes onto a little ball that keep the pivoting in the middle. no springs.

OK, thanks for the info. Sounds like everything is as it should be then, just no clips. No I have to decide to pull it out again or not. I should have probably figured that out before I started bolting peripherals on...

I don't see why you should need an engine puller for the job. the tranny is pretty straight forward to pull. bellhousing, crossmember, driveshafts.

Hahahah. Oh man, That's what I get for always overcomplicating things. Somehow I forgot that now that the engine is back in, I could just pull the transmission instead of pulling the engine back out.

Thanks man! I'll find some clips and get it done. That's a much easier way to go about this.

Get a surgeon with microscopic tools and camera to put clip on though the fork hole...

All those little pieces are still available from Toyota. I think marlin also sells them.

No engine puller ("crane") needed, but you'd be well advised to get a transmission jack. I once removed a transmission with a trolley jack (and some c-clamps to hold the transmission to the jack). Never again.

This is good advice right here. I would have tried to do it with just my regular harbor freight floor jack and really regretted it likely.

x2 on the tranny jack and I highly recommend one that pivots a little bit. the upper driver bell housing bolt is kind of a pain but everything else is straight forward,
