I have the power

cig outlet crapped out on my while I was wheelin' the other day, couldn't charge my phone anymore. decided to go ahead and replace it with a designated 12v power outlet. I searched online and was able to find one with a green backlight so it would semi match the dash lights. was a quick project, bounsing back a forth between that and putting a windshield frame gasket on my 40 I got it done in about an hour. I got the outlet on amazon for like, 10 bucks.

remove these 2 screws

remove the ash tray (3 screws)

pull bezel straight out

the OEM outlet

new outlet, i had to dremel a small amount out to fit it.

sits nice and flush

made up a quick pigtail / adaptor to run from the oem plugs to the new outlet

back together

the light is on as long as the outlet is on, so you can keep the dust cover on it if the light bothers you.

if anyone cares, i did finish the windshield gasket too.

Very cool! I just had all that stuff out of my dash last weekend to wire in a stereo, and removed the old rusted cig lighter in plans to replace it with something like you did. Will look for something like that on Amazon, thanks!

Window gasket looks good too!

PS: I'm jealous of your working tape deck too! My stock one wouldn't play any tapes properly and I couldn't find much useful info about repairing them, so put in an old CD player I had. Glad I saved all my CDs from high school!

its the only thing that came in the truck when I bought it, and after everything I replaced, I decided to keep it. adds a little character.

Nice write up! I believe this rocker style usb is pretty much an exact fit for the inserts above the radio...you could run a USB in one and a switch in the other with power for both USB and 12v running through the switch. Possible the radio would interfere with the rocker style devices though.

I went back and forth on whether I wanted a regular 12v port or a double USB port, in the end I went with the power outlet because I also have a few other doodads that I can charge in it. I did however also order a USB outlet (same diameter and round) that I MAY install somewhere else. im leaning towards what you posted though, in one of the blanks above the radio.

Yeah, no doubt the 12v is more versatile. I keep one of these in my truck:

Lights, bluetooth speakers, saws, pumps, nice to be able to run stuff down and recharge batts in the rig.

fog lamp switch and wiper nozzles

finally started gathering parts for some auxiliary lighting. I hate HATE cheapo light switches, its really a pet peeve of mine. did some homework and interweb searching, found am OEM Toyota switch from a 70 series that uses that same footprint as our rocker switches AND is horizontal so it will look great in the blanks above the radio. also tracked down some wiper nozzles that should work. and these weird things that hold our wires together under the hood. heres part numbers and pictures, enjoy. keeping with my vintage theme, I have ordered a set of 800 series IPF fogs, should be here soon.

edit : these nozzles do not fit our trucks, so if you come across them, don't buy.

part number for the switch is 84160-90-K01

wire stays

wiper nozzles

That fog light switch is perfect!

I should pick up some more of those wire harness ties. I have a few of the large versions that have gone missing over the years.

engine splash guards

so I contacted RadRubber about some splash guards for a 1st gen runner and he worked these up for me. right now they are not available on the site but they will be soon. im working on getting some heavy duty replacements for the rear body gap as well. anyways, enjoy.

in case your wondering, the little fin cut up front is because the prototype truck had tires too big and rubbed the guards. may replace later but doesnt bother me now.

splashes beware, im guarded.

OEM front bumpstop replacement

My original front control arm bump stops were pretty hard, and starting to deteriorate around the edges where the rubber bonds to the metal baseplate. Sourced the oem stops through Lakeland overstock. You will obviously require 4 total as there is a front and rear stop per control arm.

removal is straight forward, I hit each stops flange nut with a squirt of PB the night before. I used a small strap wrench on the rubber of the stop and a deep well 14mm socket on the top but.

Part number for you

Strap wrench and deep well 14mm

Driver side view

Full underview with 4 new stops.

new oem alternator and vaccuum clip

while replacing one of the vac lines on the power steering I broke the little clip that sits at the valve cover that holds the lines. tracked down the part, heres the number. I also finally received my new alternator from Toyota after about a 3 month wait. they are having a tough time getting them from Denso. price is not terrible, at about 200 bucks. heres a picture of my bill with p/n and also the belt required with p/n

from my experience so far, there is knowledge for completing jobs in most forums. and most of us have the ability to fill in the blanks with our books and manuals, but 9 times out of 10 there is a gap with the right parts and numbers. one of my goals with this thread was to compile as many of the right parts as possible for other people to reference. if I can at least help a few other people its worth my time.

i assume you meant power steering pump? neither of my ‘87 sr5 4runners has vacuum lines to the alternator. indeed, i’ve yet to own a vehicle equipped with such.

Keycw, the first person on YotaTech to add vacuum lines to their alternator......

That actually sounds like something Volkswagen would do...

Actually it's not uncommon on diesels for the alternator to have a vacuum pump integrated into it since diesel engines produce no vacuum.

hahahahahaha. increased vacuum at the alternator increases fuel mileage and power.

I realize not everyone shares my love of all things TEQ here, but for those of you that do this is a cool item. many Toyotas were offered with a Toyota brand electric or PTO driven winch back in the 80s. this controller pouch is a pretty neat piece of history that is still available through the dealer. I got mine from cityracer because I like dealing with him. I obviously do not have a Toyota winch but its a neat thing to keep the Warn remote in. as always, P/N provided in second picture.
