anyone have/install REAR speakers on a 1st gen 4Runner?

Here's what worked for me. I used some 3/16" wood panel material and cut it to match the curve of the wheelwell on the bottom and cut it at the top flush with the bedrail. They are cut wide enough to fit a 6x9 into and I was able to use self tapping screws along the top and bottom edges to secure the panel to metal. I did all this over the plastic side panel covers which had already been cut for 6x9's. It's a very secure and quick way to attach a variety of speaker sizes just rear of the rollbar. Make a template out of cardboard to get idea where to make cut following curve of the bottom edge. The panels meets tight with the carpet so you have plenty to shoot screws into.
Good luck!!

Your setup isn't too bad Roger but my wonderful red panels in the back are showing their old age and are cracking up from the prior owners abusing them. I had to pull out the passenger side one today and I'm trying to cut a sheet of metal to fit in it's place with the speaker behind it to stay out of the rain. Although I could go with marine speakers for when I put on the bikini top.

Full harness and new(to me) 4runner powered rear speakers
These are 2nd gen 4runner rear speaker boxes with internal amplifier, the first gen are similar. As above they are factory mounted behind the panel near the rollbar on the little tabs.
The post you quoted are fabricated mounts for generic aftermarket speakers.

Here is an idea on how to mount them with out cutting the plastic. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/classi...restore-5.html
My 4runner had a large powered subwoofer box, removed by PO before sale (they left the "monster cable" power wire. So glad they didn't cut the panels.
