To hoist the the head with intake manifold up while I thread all the hoses and wires through the lower manifold. It's heavy and I don't wanna ruin a new headgasket.

I didn't use RTV at all when I did my HG...Mind you I didn't pull the timing cover or drop the pan. I did however have the intake apart and the exhaust apart and I didn't use any RTV on the paper gaskets at all. No leaks so far it's been a year.

Pack the gears of the oil pump with either Vasoline & sta-lube marine grease. Also run the starter for a short bit.

Holy crap....
1st of all I guess that those 2 pictures are officially the Hawaiian-1-finger-salute.
2nd:on your little suggestion of using 2 people, is better to be the one swinging the hammer, than holding the wrench.
3rd: your picture of the back of the timing cover answered my question about if the passenger's side water pipe gets a gasket...yes it does, i see it in your pic.
4th: Timing cover or head 1st? FSM shows timing cover....I'm going by that. there are some key areas you need to put FIPG where the head mates with the cover and it's a sloppy unreliable mess (my opinion) doing the head 1st and smooshing the timing cover in there.....I don't know, I may change my tune when I get that far.
5th: vaseline is what i packed the oil pump with.
6th: a hoist? really? I stood on an 8'' high little platform I had laying around and took the hood latch square to the belly....hurt for days.....you gotta take your lumps....maybe that hoist explains why you had so much trouble.
7th: you gotta get that thing off the hoist to clean you head.
8th: GREAT JOB!

Haha you guys are a trip! Everyone is giving me a hard time about the hoist. I couldn't remove my lower intake manifold so I had to thread ALL the wires through it. It was an absolute pain putting the crap through but imagine trying to preserve a new headgasket while pulling all the wires through it.

So I'm putting the timing components back on and I'm at a crossroad, Do I put the head on or the timing cover? If I put the head on first I'll be able to keep the tensioner compressed but if I put the cover on first I wont be able to compress the tensioner. What have you guys done?

Looks like I hit another snag and I might have to use my old timing cover... I didn't notice but there are some threaded studs that are on the old timing cover but not the new one :\ Is this normal for all engnbldr covers?
Old cover with a total of 3 studs

New cover without any studs:

Should I just reuse my old cover? It has grooves but they didn't eat through all the way. or???

those come out.....carefully...put some PB blaster on them and use a very gentle twist with small vice grips on the non-threaded areas.
those have to be re-used.....just un-messed that little screw-up on mine...the studs TED includes are for your fan (4 studs...mount on the front of the water pump where the fan clutch attaches)

I already chimed in on that, but I am equally concerned like you are.
