Alternator Upgrade

Has anyone upgraded there alternator to a 100 amp MR2 alternator, and if so
what did you need to do to make it fit ?, it looks like it would almost be a bolt in, but im sure some modifications are needed. any info is appreciated.

sounds like you should try it out and make it work. then do a write up. im sure lots of people would like this to work. i know i want a bigger alt

Check out a Mean Green at LC engineering. 100A @ idle 140-200A @ running RPMs $369. Not cheap but a great alternator.

You could also have your stock alt re-wound, I believe. As for the cost.....I don't know

Unless you're running dual batteries and a butt load of lights is this really an upgrade?

They can upgrade the stock wimpy 60 amp to 130 amp, 75 of which is available at idle! I paid $170.00 shipped both ways @ little over a year ago.

130W lights x 2 21.6A

Compressor 15-30A

500W Amp 40A

Winch 40A

Depends on what your doing. Just the lights could be a strain on a factory alternator. I agree that the best thing would be a dual battery setup and an HO alternator. But if you only use the accessories only when the vehicle is running the alternator is fine. Personally I like to blast my stereo while winching and blinding everyone around me!!!

I have read this write up before, but its for a 3.slow V6, i have a 22RE in my 86 4Runner, so thats why i was asking what needs to be done to make it work ?.

Keep in mind: I just checked the FSM, the alternator is NOTthe same between the 3VZE and the 22RE. They use some of the same parts, so if you do a search and find posts by me saying they're the same, I was wrong, they aren't.

somebody should make those brackets and sell them. I know i for one would buy one because i no longer have a welder.

Upgrade the ground and power cables that run from the battery. That should be the first thing you do.

I'd personally get it rewound, then there are no fitment issues at all.

I went to a local shop originally, but they told me they couldn't get a kit for the Toyota alternator. That's when I looked up Boyle. They add a new rectifier/diode as well....they are GREAT~Top notch work.
