So what are you guys doing to swap out the whimpy stock alternator? Gm swap or just upgrading stock alt?

 

I had mine rebuilt at a shop in Ballard... he found an OEM 100 amp kit, and I love it.. the only issue is the regulator cuts if off at about 650rpm, not sure why....

 

An alternator out of a Toyota MR2 with power steering is a pretty easy upgrade, and is 100amp.

yea, kinda curious about this myself, i havent seen a good consencus on running a bigger alt here. im so supprised someone doesnt make an aftermarket one...

Well, it won't "directly" bolt up, you have to do some minor modifications to the lower adjusting arm and electrical connection. The link I provided shows you the details, the instructions are for a 3.0L V-6 so I don't know about it working with a 22re... The engine that the alternator is "for" is irrelevant, only how much the car requires, the bolt locations and sizes, and the belt used matter. For the MR2's, they have electrically assisted power steering (rather than a belt on the power steering pump it is an electric motor). Because of this they need a pretty big alternator.

It's important to note that you can get one of these alternators "new" from an auto parts store for about $170, and the rest of the modifications cost about $10 if you use your existing alternator adjusting arm; this turns out significantly cheaper than most "bolt-in" aftermarket alternators. I have heard some bad reviews of the Mr. Alternator company that makes bolt-in HO alternators, so be wary of them. Not sure about other brands.

 

Yeah i have the 3.0. I was thinkin of the green high output alternators. But they are like 400 bucks. I might just go the mr2 route. To bad no one just makes the bracket. Hell they would make alot of money.

 

If its a 3vze ya got, you should be idlin at 800rpm... Besides, whats a little more RPM anyhoo? lol

At one time I had the "kit" that stuffed in a Wranger Power Products modded GM alternator into a 22RE.

It fit - barely.
I worried all the time about the coolant hose that it rubbed on occasionally.

I ended up going with a modded NipponDenso alt. Bolt in deal. Stock belt size.
You have to upgrade the charge cable tho.

 

i tried searching and got 4 threads but will a cs130 gm alternator fit in a 22re?

also i was looking on mr. alternator and they dont have any specifically listed for 87 but will the alternators from 89-91 work? did the plugs change from in these years or something? because its still for the 22re so will it still work?

Boyle will build it however you ask them for the same price. They provide a "cert" showing the output at various RPM's. Mine was 65 amps at idle & 135 amps max.

 

I've got my truck down for a bunch of work right now, and one of the things on my list is finally getting rid of the factory alternator. I've got an electric fan, lights, and electronics pulling off it and a winch is in my near future....

Has your Boyle alt been treating you well? Any problems? Would you recommend them?

My main complant with them was the packaging they did for the return trip. Send it to them double boxed with real padding (not paper) and use new or near new boxes (they reuse the box you send them). And request that they double box it for the return trip.

Other than the shipping damage (which they fixed at no charge BTW) from the poor packaging mine is doing fine. They come back nice and clean.

 

They aren't that far from me, so I can just drop it off and pick it up. Gives me a reason to get up into the mountains anyway.

How long have you been running yours?
