95 4runner won’t move after egr delete

Hi everyone! I’ve been fixing up my automatic 1995 4runner with the 3.0 in it. I ran into an issue a while back where if the egr was plugged in, the cel would come on and the O/D OFF light would stay on full time, not blinking and not able to turn the od on with the shifter button, the idle was steady and it would rev, but it would barely move forward unless the shifter was in low. However, if the egr was unplugged the cel and O/D OFF light would both go off and O/D would function properly with the shifter button and it would drive normally, but the idle was low and surging. Two days ago I unhooked all the vacuum lines to the egr and capped them, cel light came on, but it idled good and would move. Yesterday I deleted the egr and now I have the cel and O/D OFF light on full time, and it will barely move unless in low gear, and it idles fine. I’m thinking shift solenoids, or an electrical issue. When I pull the efi fuse and reset the cel it will drive normally for a minute and then the cel will kick back on and it’ll go back to barely moving. If anyone has insight that would be super helpful! Thanks guys!

these are the pics of everything I capped off and everything I removed

Wow! You really went to town on stripping your engine compartment!

First, when you cut-and-paste your posting (are you listing it on other forums? Tsk-tsk), the type color gets wonky. You can edit it back to readable by high-lighting the text, and setting the text color to "automatic."

Next, I'm not aware of any connection between EGR and the automatic transmission. Something else is going on here.

Since you have a CEL, what is your truck trying to tell you? My WAG is code 52.

thanks for the tips! I put it up on the newbie tech section as well, I wasn’t aware it messed up the text, thanks for letting me know! I just edited it so hopefully it’s good to go now!

I didn’t think there was any connection either, it’s just odd that it ran fine without it plugged in but still bolted on the engine.

As far the the cel, my diagnostics port doesn’t work when I jump it unfortunately, I might just need to take it to a shop with an OBDI scanner.

Just a thought cause I didn't see it mentioned. Did you install the resistors when doing the delete. If you did, did you verify the resistance value of the resistors supplied to what is needed to make sure you were given the correct ones?

good catch! I forgot to mention that! I did install a 10k resistor, I get the cel whether it’s there or not.

That sounds like a limp mode that the computer is putting the truck in to because it senses something is wrong and is protecting itself.

Any thoughts on what it could be? I’m gonna change out the transmission solenoids this weekend and see if that helps at all. Other than that I’m not really sure where to start.

Transmission is fine. Ecm is locking everything down. Ecm is fine. It’s looking for something that’s not there and when it sees it’s not there it restricts everything.

You said it was fine and it would drive with everything capped but had a surging idle but when you removed everything it stopped working. There is probably some sensor somewhere it’s wanting to see that it’s not and it’s going into limp mode.

I’m not familiar enough with these engines but do you need to have the tune readjusted after pulling the egr? You mentioned resistors but are you sure they are correct and they are attached properly?

thank you for the reply! It makes sense it’d be the ecm looking for something, I’ll take it to a shop with a reader and have them scan it for me. The 10k resistor is the correct one and it’s spliced in correctly as well.
