Started up my truck this morning and within 20 seconds of me driving off I hear a swooshing sound(like an aerosol can) and look in my mirror to see a long line of oil. I drive back home and take a look under the engine where the oil is pooling to look for the leak. Everything is covered in oil so i have no idea where it could be. Would it be ok to take the truck to the cleaners. Where do leaks like this normally come from?

 

I wouldnt drive it since its leaking alot of oil. Just crawl under there and start lookin.

Common places for leaks. Oil pan, rear main seal, valve cover, um....id start there.

 

Let it settle, get some engine degrease, then either watch it leak out

 

A few people i have talked to about this think the engine may be blown. for good. I am now looking at the CARS program just passed by the government to see if i can get the $4500 rebate on a new fuel efficient car. The old car is supposed to be in "drivable" condition so I dont know how that will pan out. I would really hate to lose my runner, they will crush it if i turn it in..

You didnt state your year but i thought the vehicle had to be pre1990 and get less that 14mpg or something like that. I remember thinking that my other vehicle wouldnt qualify when i heard the actual details.

Why dont you just try to see if you fix it before running out and buying something else.

I read up on the CARS program today, a few requirements that come to mind:
the old car must be drivable
must get under 18mpg - different for work trucks
for $3500 you must get 4mpg improvement on your new car
for $4500 10mpg improvement
car you buy must be new
dealer takes rebate off price of car

that being said i love my truck but I know next to nothing other than normal maintenance. It's worth saving but I can't put $2000 to fix it. It has other work to be done already..CV Joints, needs new tires, 4wd does not work...i just don't have the money. if theres any more ideas on this id love to hear em, thanks again

Problem Solved. Gasket on the oil filter broke. Oil just gushing out of the thing. Thank you guys for your help

 

Was it a FRAM filter by chance?

 

no it was not, no label on it, was white. put on (way too tight) by the last place that changed my oil. I replaced it with a fram though

Pretty sure that's not the case, I read through the official site and did not spot that anywhere. Believe me, I was looking for a reason that I would not qualify. I guess I should point out, since I see so many Canadians here, this bill was for USA..
