95 4 Runner 3vz-e fan pulley issues

So out of the blue my 4 runner decided it wanted to have the 2 pulleys that operate the fan to just sieze up and burn through one of my belts. Not sure what is going on, any advice would be helpful. Truck still starts up, fresh oil change...frozen pulleys :/

The pulleys don't operate the fan, the belts do. So presumably one (more?) of the pulleys on one (two?) of the belts failed. This isn't rocket surgery; since the belt is gone, you can put your hand on the pulley(s) and see if it will turn.

My guess is the idle pulley; it sits low and is subject to crud. http://www.toyotapartsoverstock.com/...844035030.html

Sounds like the water pump seized up. Time to start taking things apart

So if the water pump is bad, will that cause the fan to not spin? I just pulled off the fan, heat sink, and pulleys.

What's not spinning? Just the fan? Fan pulleys and fan? Since you have it off does the water pump spin?

When the truck was running the fan was not spinning. The belts just started squealing and smoking until one snapped. Before I pulled the fan off it spun by hand with a lot of resistance (not sure if that is normal)

Not normal; when the fan is "warm" it's only turning the water pump, which should turn easily. (When cold, the fan is disconnected and spins even easier.)

Again, assuming you have a 22re (the 3VZE is completely different), it sound like a jammed water pump.

3VZE is what I've got, but I'll take the issue of the water pump and replace it.

It sounds like the bearing in the fan bracket (false water pump) that the fan mounts on may have seized?

Ya see, the two engines are completely different. As rworegon points out, your water pump isn't even connected to the belts that failed. Your problem (from your description) is the fan bracket.

You can get it from the dealer, cheaper from an online dealer. http://www.toyotapartsoverstock.com/...630765040.html

Or, even cheaper at RockAuto for the AISIN FBT-007 which is the same part as scope103 shows above, but without the Toyota box.

Just dealt with this. Don't get the cheap one from Napa. It broke again 3 days later. They sell a better quality one for 90 bucks more. Made by the right china company. Forgot the name. I paid 400 "I think out the door. Might as well do the timing belt and water pump while you are in there. Took me a few days of easy work with no prior experience. I could do it again in a few hours tops now though.
