How many excuses would you like?

Biggest would be no $$$$ to buy parts.

2nd would be I've had almost no time to do anything.Work has been exhausting me.

For now, I am just lurking and reading up on this process and trying to scheme how to get some extra $$$$$.....

Planning on taking my game into the basement and cleaning the head and valves as best I can with what I have.

I do have a question. The one spark plug was not threaded all the way in even though it felt like it was, can I re-tap that? What size? It's the same hole that the ceramic broke on the plug when I was taking the old plug out. Ran well as-is, so it's not like it's not getting the proper spark, but I just want to do this while I have the head out.

 

Use a thread chaser, not a tap. Something like this. I think our plugs are 14mm.

same kinda question.......as far as the head bolts go, I know enough that I will use new ones, but on about half the holes, the were very wet with oil and the others were dried on / caked on mess of oil or whatever......I assume that there must be a good reason why there is oil there right??? But anyway, as a way to clean them out properly, so I use the same kind of "tap'' or something like that to get all the debris out of the holes?? My concern is not being able to get the bolts torqued down properly due to debris or oil.

Be sure to clean the head bolt holes out well. You could buy a chaser or make one by cutting a few grooves in an old head bolt (which is probably what I'll do). The grooves provide a place for crud to collect. The pic of the plug chaser I linked above shows what I mean.

A few of my bolts were bathed in oil, while the rest were dry. The tighest one for me was 2nd back from the front on the driver's side. It was dry but also slightly rusted.

 

as you see in the pic, I had the same problem bolt. I'm going to assume there should be oil in there since of the several pics I've seen they all seem that way.

yeah, im gonna be looing for a tap that has notches in it to puke the oil and crud up and out.

 

I think I'd use the head bolt trick instead of buying another tool that you'll only use once (hopefully). Take an old head bold and cut slices out of it and use that to chase the threads.

Make sure you reseat the valves. The valve lapping toll is cheap and the goop is not expensive either.

 

OK, like I said, questions, I got a million of them.

What would I cut a bolt with?

What's that tube of stuff for? Cleaning the valves? I want to see what I get off using SEAFOAM and a scotchbrite and brake cleaner (besides a hazmat spill).

I'm leaving m headgasket on until I'm absolutely ready to put a new one on, figure it's providing some protection to the block right now, but I will scrape it clean.......can I shine the piston tops the same way as the valves??

I'd scrape the old gasket off and clean the block real nice like and cover with a film of oil for now.

Lapping the valves will keep the seats and the valves tight.

Dremel tool or angle grinder with a cut-off disc.

 

Just roll it back and forth in your hands. Like making a play-doe snake.

I think I understand now.......because it grinds the valve against the head to make a mating surface right? the valves will rotate without an effort if i'm seeing that right.....the 2nd video made it better to understand.......

yep that be it. You will need to rent a valve removal tool though, they are a bit of a pain to get out. Or you may be able to make something like the kid made in the second vid.

 

I meant to comment on that tool. That was a pretty slick trick with that window ut in there like that on copper pipe. That's a Maguiver(?spelling) trick. "necessity is the mother of invention"......is that the saying?

But that certainly looks like a basement project if I ever saw one.

They'll clean up real nice like. The springs and the split cone washers are a real pain to work with. I had a buddy give me a hand with them.

 

i remember seeing a write-up where someone put the valves in a drill press and cleaned them up perfectly.
