AWESOME!!! Do you do charity rides to raise the money. I bet that is fantastic to help the kids like that. Every year we (@work) as well as every department in the hospital each sponsor a child that otherwise wouldn't have a Christmas. This year my wife would like to have my kids and us volunteer at one of the places serving Thanksgiving dinner. No matter how much I whine about not having the $$$ to do this re-build, it all must be kept in perspective, always.

OK....back to the silliness......

Last night after I posted that about the cleaning, my computer decided it didn't want to play anymore. After about an hour of it being really slow and threatening to put it in the weeds across the street I gave up.

"War & Peace", I like that.........

Pics coming soon.....no eyeball pics, sorry. It is irritated though.

I plan on taking the head OUTSIDE so I don't die from all the fumes.....that stuff stinks.....I heard about that one ALOT last night.

ive always had luck with that gasket remover stuff at autozone and a razor blade. You plan on having that head shaved down at all? the machine shop that did my boring will do it for $30. if you do though, you'll have to completely disassemble the head.

I know I will get flamed for this but , NO, I have no plans for machining of anything. The truck ran great BEFORE this happened, never so much as a hiccup befor I put the chain into the wall apparently for the 2nd time. My theory was that I did it the 1st time last year, sealed it with thermagasket and wore through that in July causing it to fail the 2nd time.

Neglected, but not abused. I would LOVE a squeaky clean head and block and all new guts, but that's not going to happen. Not this time around.

My ENGNBLDR list.....

Steel rail timing kit
Timing cover (all inclusive) with oil and water pumps
full gasket kit with head bolts

All in all my math puts this at about a less than $300 purchase......not too shabby......I want to buy it all at once so I'm putting my pennies in a jar......

Looking good man!!! Ya that brake cleaner can do a number on ya. Should have warned you about the fumes. But if your anything like me you would have done it anyway thinking "how bad could it really be".

Just use a razor blade and the stuff will come off. I used denatured alcohol as well and that helped. I'd also use an old tooth brush on the valves it will help clean them up and you'll be able to get into the ports.

As far as machining...as long as it didn't over heat you "should" be alright in just doing a good cleaning.

The only 2 I know of are in Wyoming and Dickson City.....

I saw a torque wrench at AUTOZONE yesterday for like $20 I think.......do I need an inch/lbs one too or just ft/lbs.

some of those bolts only get torqued to like 14-16 ft-lbs so an in-lbs might be a good idea. most 3/8 torques only go down to 20 i think.

How about this......I used a whole can of that stuff..........mostly done though, just wanted toclean up the exterior a lttle more. No big deal.

Got all that grainy stuff away from the rockers, Was like fresh asphalt coming out....I'm sure that was the thermagasket mixed with the oil....no harm, it was not a solid.

yes, i know i saw a mention of the valve cover ones being minimal and some of the timing chain components being like 12??ft/lbs(I think that's what i read).

I wil just end up getting both........with having a 2nd vehicle (the '88 4runner 3.0) to work on, I will just go out and buy them.......thanks for the offer though......

Once SOMEONE (LUMPY!!!!!!) starts pulling apart their 3.0 and posting a thread to beat all threads on a step-by-step, bolt-by-bolt, play-by-play...I will feel more confident about starting that when I finish my truck. As I recall, and as I've posted, pulling stuff apart doesn't cost anything....assuming that you aren't driving that with bent valves.
