after you get that oil pan on you can come up here and change out my oil pan gasket for me. ENGNBLDR Rock gasket not doing well at all and I got only about 2000 miles on it.

without me re-reading all the specs on the 1987 oil pan.....can you get away with an FIPG kinda fix?

that is a damm shame, considering what a pain in the Dartos Tunic (hehehehe) it is to access the pan.

I am gonna try the fipgish (rtv) fix, but I had already rtv'd it. maybe I wasn't supposed to in the first place or used the wrong color? I always forget which color rtv to use where. Fuel, water, oil etc etc.

I'm thinking black is black.....I insisted on using the Toyota FIPG because I really don't want to do that part again......I'm gonna assume Black RTV is the equivalent to it though.

If I rememer right, mine had a gasket (was not cork) and that oem gasket was held in place by some beads that were run of either black or dark grey FIPG.

I might have had the oil pan bolts torqued down too much as well I don't know. The torque specs on those tiny bolts are real low though. And remember also I had to take this pan off from the beginning twice. That I am sure didn't help matters either.

it's like 8 or 9ft/lbs.

took a pic of the page, not sure if it's readable...have the book right here...Chilton's 1970 to 1988 repair manual...

From: Bryan Tx,
I put my oil pan on with only silicone, used "the right stuff" from Napa. The stuff works great but is a little pricey!

From: Bryan Tx,
Neither the FSM or my Chilton say to use a gasket, they give a procedure to fill the little grooves on the pan with FIPG. Napa does offer a gasket, but it looked cheap to me so I decided against it.

I ended up going with the gasket and have yet to find a leak. That was last year and to be honest the gasket made life easier. I think it was a felpro.

my imagination does not serve me well in trying to figure out how to place a gasket on that.... it's a 1-piece right?? so you have to get that pan clear of the strainer and all that just to fit a new one on....versus dropping the pan enough and giving due-diligence to cleaning it up and using the right amount of spooge on it.

Yeah it was one piece but i had my pan off completely to clean it. When it came to installing the gasket it was a snap. i just placed it on the pan and snugged it up. It might be a pain in the butt if your's is hard to wiggle into place.
