Exclamation 92 2wd w/ 94 sr5 cluster - tach issues

okay, i swapped in a sr5 cluster from a 94 4x4 4cyl into my 92 2wd 4cyl tonight. prev owner of the part said it worked perfect when pulled. problem im having is, when i turn the key to on (even before i start) the tach reads 2500. and it doesnt move when i start it or rev it. i havent driven it yet, but what does this seem like it is? wiring issue on my truck? bad tach in cluster? maybe my truck just needs to learn it? i dont know, but i wanna make it work. thanks.

If you want some guesses, I'm going to guess there is a wiring/ECU difference between the models/years or the sender is different. I'd start by looking at the EWDs for both your 92 and the 94 and see if there is a difference and check to see if there is a different part number for the tach sender. Its a good bet Toyota changed something.

I had a similar problem; i bought one off ebay for the steal of like 22.00. only my truck wouldn't even start with that cluster plugged in. mine would also read some number as soon as the key was on. i let a girl at school who is an electrical engineering major look at it and it had fried a capacitor and some resistors. guess i got what i payed for.

Just because something plugs in doesn't mean its wired right, I'm told Toyota had as many as 4 different ECUs in one model year of the 5VZFE (2000 IIRC)

You could always run a wire from the back of your cluster to the negative terminal on the coil. Then you know what you are seeing is accurate.

In 1992 sometime, they did change to an electric speedometer (not sure if that's going to make a difference).

wiring pinout is the same on all third gen trucks. i suspected this with my problems, but it is the same even after changing to an electronic speedo
