You know, I don't see the adjustment screw altering freeplay in the gearbox, it does definitely change the force required to steer.... I had some freeplay in mine, it was 95% in part due to the connection from the union joint to the steering column... the bolts were loose at the rubber bushing... check that too!

Well, you can beg to differ with the FSM all you want. But it's a losing battle, virtually every time.

And whether or not you want to believe what I say, makes no difference to me. I couldn't care less. I'll reiterate this though, I've done it, and it does.

Hey, there's a good lead... Where do I find that joint? Is it under that black boot?

Perhaps what Gevo saw was just that his gearbox was already sufficiently tightened, so that add'l tightening (over-tightening) only increased the steering effort. In his case his problem was elsewhere.

We often need to widen our gaze.

And I'm w/MudHippy on his basic point; the folks writing the FSM knew what they were doing. Always start (and usually end) there.

Was just thinking out loud Mudhippy, don't take offense. One thing I like about the forum is.. you can think out loud and other people chime in and you figure ˟˟˟˟ out that way

derockus, my joint is under the boot.

Scope, I am an advocate of following the fsm... however, sometimes unless a part is brand new it doesn't act like it should and the fsm doesn't really give many suggestions on how to make it work, it says 'replace'.. With that said, I have now over a 100 pages printed from the fsm and it's been a gold mine for me while putting my engine back together... it does take some experience to use it efficiently though, as i've been learning.
