Welded ifs question

I have a 95 yota hilux previous owner welded the gears on the ifs . Most of the time when im trailing I leave one hub unlocked because I'm able to steer in tight turns . If I leave both locked its to hard to steer . Was wondering is it ok to leave one hub locked and one not in 4low ? Will this cause damage ? I don't see how I could turn it with both locked that's y. I only lock both when the trail gets a little rough and I'm only going straight . And with only one hub locked going up a small incline would it cause damage ?
