hello,

I have a 4runner 1st gen w/3vze engine, Canada version. I don't have a service manual for it (and couldn't find one - I had found for 88 but 22 and 1993 but 2nd gen).
the problem is that I don't have instrument lights, no daytime lights and no voltage on their wires (front and rear). turn, headlights, hazards and dome lights are working. so there is ground. fuses are ok.
where could be the problem?

did you check the fuses inside the driver side kick panel? the "engine" fuse i know controls the instrument lights and possibly the daytime lights.

I think I'll start a wire-by-wire checking. everything looks good on it... but it's not working

I had a similar issue on my '81. My fuses etc look fine but it turned out to the be contacts in the fuse box that were not allowing the fuse to complete the circuit. i cleaned the contacts and crimped them together slightly. issue resolved.

 

I'm doing the same thing. put some contact cleaner an we will see. It's the last, but not the least. The least is to check for a relay under the dash, somewhere in the middle.

Yes, Don't just look.
Verify with other owners that you're looking at the right fuse.
Check for voltage at power side of fuse, then load side, then check every wire to the lights concerned until you see where you lose 12V.

There are some parts I'm not familiar with, like the daytime running light and such. If one of those relays went bad, it might short circuit the rest like you are experiencing.

 

I started to break it apart!
tomorrow I will make a new front wiring.

 

??? You don't even know where the problem is, and now you're making your own wiring?

 

Sounds like the DRL relay!

Did 89 have the integration relay that it seems 9x10 to the 6th circuits run through??

 

not all the front, only daylights. to see if it is a switch problem. (could be...)

@wyoming9: I had searched but did not find any info on that. and no DRL relay. under the stereo, in the middle of the dash, I have the 3rd fuses/relay block with the heater.

 

Oh I see... Sorry , BUT no need to take change wiring. Just test switches first, listen to relays click...
IF switched power:
Just check for voltage before the switch. If there's voltage before switch, turn switch on. There should be voltage

If switched-ground like tail light switch:
Check for continuity to ground on ground side of switch. Then, turn switch on. Measure continuity to ground on side of switch away from ground. There should be continuity is witch is good.

If you don't know where to test, and If you have schematic, pls post it here so we can indicate on schematic where to do tests (Like I do here on a 22RE schematic)...

 

If it has DRL`s it needs to have a relay.

That is what makes them work. Does it even have them??

I really wish I had the 89 EWD to know for sure.

 

well... it seems like tail relay is not working. measured it is ok with and without voltage. but on the car... weird.

put it back all together and repaired some wires and cig and stereo.
