My horn doesn't work. The fuse is good. I took the cover off the steering wheel and cleaned the contacts. Still nothing.

If you look at the pics below, see the red wire. Should I have 12v there. Can I take the horn out and hook it straight to the battery to test it. It has 2 wires. Thanks.

 

I grabbed a horn from the junk yard and verified that it worked. I hooked it up and still nothing.

I hooked a volt meter up to the plug that plugs onto the horn. Should I get 12v when I press the horn button. I did not.

 

There is a circular contact on the back of the steering wheel that allows it to stay connected when the wheel is turned. Those contacts tend to wear out and fall into pieces (at least in my experience). I ended up wiring a push button to the dash. At the time (8-10 years ago) I couldn't find those contacts to replace them. You may have better luck now. I'll search for them and let you know if I come across anything. Hope this helps!

 

I thought my year was different than that. I seen a video where a guy put a .22 cal empty brass on there.

I haven't had my wheel off. But I'll go pull it now. Thanks for the tip.

Ya. That's the same as mine. I just pulled it apart and cleaned it. My contact button was a little sticky too so I gave it a shot of WD40. Smooth now. I bet it will work. But I'm going to go ahead and get a .22 case and put over the button. I know it will be making good contact then,,,lol.

If you don't hear back from me you know i shot myself trying to get the bullet out of a .22,,,lol.

So I cleaned it all up, put the .22 casing on there and guess what. IT DIDN'T WORK!!

So then I changed the plug that connects to the horn that I suspected from the start. NOW IT WORKS!!

Funny thing is when I hooked it straight to the battery to test it, it was very loud. Now that it's installed it doesn't seem so loud. Any ideas on that,,,lol.

 

Probably increased resistance in one of the contacts. Use your voltmeter to test the resistance in your connections and wires.

 

Toyota parts are bullet-proof. Problems arise from bad connection, poor assembly, poor maintenance.
Lots of power drop over thin wiring from battery, to fuse, to horn, to cabin, to steering column, and finally to ground.
I plan to rewire mine with a relay circuit to fix that and to allow me to put additional horn / stronger horn. Will post write-up WHEN I around to it.

 

It could be because you're in the truck not holding the horn. Have someone push it while you stand in front of the truck!

 

Have you considered just using a sign?

I should add that I accidentally bent a valve during the build so I took it to the machine shop to have the guide replaced and replaced all of the valves while I was at it.

I recently fixed mine. Was the wiring in the passenger wheel well Area. Steering wheel Contacts we’re fine, horn was fine, but wiring had been beaten up in the passenger wheel well. Hope this helps give you one more thing to check out.
