87 4runner 22re will not fire on second cylinder
#1
my old head was worped so i got a brand new head put on my 22re. it runs and drives but the second cylinder is not working. this is what else has been done to it since then. the timing chain has been checked and it's fine.
comperssion test and all the cylinders read 160
leakdown test
new O2 sensor
put a different computer in it
new spark plugs and wires
new distributer cap and roater
new fuel filter
new injecter seals
had the head double checked to make sure it was put on right. no one knows what else to do to it. the mechanic just gave up and brought it back to my house. has anyone else had problems like this? i dont know what to do.

What do you mean by not working? No fuel, no spark?
I would make sure that you have spark first. Then make sure the injector works.. .maybe swap it with a different cylinder... if it makes the other one not work.. bingo..

I suppose the compression check kind of rules this out, but have the valves been adjusted since the rebuild? I worked on a 22R where the exhaust valve was just enough too tight that the cylinder wouldn't fire at idle.

That guy has no business working on cars if he can't figure that out.
Move the #2 injector to a different cylinder and see if the problem moves. Check the harness. It batch fires. The #2 ground will join a second ground an then it will go to a ground lug on one of the bolts on the upper plenum between #2 and #3.
I really wonder if he got #2 and #3 Injector wire or maybe the cold start crossed up.

i did have the injectors moved to different cylinders and the second cylinder still didnt work even with a different injector. ill get the grounds and the wiring harness checked.ill post again when i try those things and the valves have been adjusted. someone also told me that maybe the fuel regulater sensor or what ever it is called could have something to do with it?? thanks Jeff

I assume it is running very rough. I had a problem awhile back on my '85rec. The engine was running well, but without warning ran very rough. Pulling the valve cover off revealed a broken exhaust spring (on #2).
As the valve spring is necessary to open the valve, it is probable that the valve would close but not open, thus you would get compression. Not sure about that, as I didn't check it, so others should sanity check me on that.
Removing the valve cover is easy on the 22re. Replacing the valve spring turned out to be trivial as well, although I had it done for $200 including parts and labor. Has run fine ever since.
