could be that your rocker arms need to be adjusted or that the adjusting screws are worn however the valve tap should ocure at idle as well if thats the case i kinda wonder if perhaps your cam bearings are worn causeing the cam to ever so slightly shift under load hense changing the clearances between your cam lobes and your rocker arms perhaps???? rather unlikly but i would deffinatly remove your rocker cover and check your clearances

What's your timing set at? It's possible that someone advanced it a bunch, and now it's pinging under high load.

also try a little octane boost and see if that helps any at all. ....if not check the valves.

since you're carb'd, it's also possible that the jet(s) are partially clogged in the carb or that the carb baseplate gasket is worn or the carb is not torqued down on the manifold, any one of which could cause you to go lean with the throttle opened up wide and start detonation.
but I'd start with a quick timing check and set first to see if the problem goes away.

IIRC, stock is 5 degrees (with vacuum lines off of the distributor), but most people advance it up to 10 or 12.

okay, comment from a ASE mechanic IE Me. It is sparl knock, timing is too advanced A. Or you need to use 93 octance that will stop is. All engines will detonate(pinging) with too much timing advance or improper grade of fuel. A build up of carbon in the cylinders from running 87 or 89 octane has happened or is happening, it's causing your pre-ignition(pinging). Has nothing to do with your rocker adjustment not when your hearing the pinging under a load, improperly adjusted rockers will rattle at all times and only get noisier as rpms increase.
