86 4runner wierd sound from rear

ok this is wierd and i can't locate the problem. over 20 mph i hear a loud whosh whosh..... almost rhithmic. starts at 20mph and keeps the same flow and time all the way to 50mph. (just got it, fastet i've gone) took apart brakes and knocked out rust . still does it. sounds the same no matter what speed. i hope i'm not screwed here.

is it relative to drive speed, or transmission speed, or engine speed?

pop the engine in neutral and see if the noise continues.

also, any idea where from? front? rear? left? right? center?

Hmmm....odd. Tempo doesn't change with speed? That rules out tires or anything that moves relative to velocity. Odd. Were you listening to Pink Floyd recently?

What comes to mind is tire tread/sidewall separation.....
or a wheel bearing going dry...

Wheel bearing. and they cost about 75 each. When you are in there you should replace the seals too. there are two per side. I had to get mine pressed out at a machine shop, that ran me 30 per side.

Tire's what I thought at first, too. But, wouldn't the tempo of the sound made change with speed? I figure a bad wheel bearing would to. Even then, wouldn't a wheel bearing "click" instead of "whoosh"?

Might take it to a tire shop you trust and have them look at it. A trained eye would help and it shouldn't cost you much for them to just look.

I noticed mine all at the same pitch. the sound didn't change due to speed. At first I thought it was the u-joints. So I replaced them...no..... it was the bearings. The sound was only there when I was accelerating or keeping constant throtle.

Hmm...and no clicking. Learn something new everyday. Thanks for the explanation.
